Happy with the game but we have a glaring weakness with our running game. Is it scheme? Rbs? Oline? Or a combination of all of it?

Can we win a NC with a lack of a running game?

We’ve got 5 blockers against 8-9 guys in the box. When TN had their typical 4-3 Bama ran successfully. If you’re gonna face 8-9 in the box and you want to run you have to go to 12 personnel or pass that football. Why we didn’t try to spread them out I’ll never know.

That’s right. Formation is some of it, some of it is Tenn stacking the box. Btw Hill non injured is pretty damn good.

Hill should be the lead back moving forward with Miller as a 3rd down, passing situation guy. Miller is hesitating too much, his vision is poor, and he’s going down at first contact way too much for his build. 28 doesn’t really bring anything special at the moment.

This plus it just seems
Like teams know our play call when we run. Are we showing tells somehow?

Had way better luck running it outside tonight than up the middle. I wanna say our best middle run was Jam for 5 or 6 yds. Think Hill in the 2nd half played a huge role in maintaining our lead

I’m so tired of running it up the middle for barely any gain or 1 yard.

grubbs play calls are freakin head scratchers far to often. bernard saved the day with his running ability after a really dumb playcall. the back to back run calls to start the second half, smh... it's like grubb isnt happy unless he stresses the offense to the max. plus, he gets predictable on first down.

i think two issues with the run game specifically are, 1- the o-line is to fat n slow. cant get to the blocks quick enough, consistently enough. 2- the rb's vision is not the best. when the o-line has opened holes the rb's have missed more than they've hit.

thats my untrained opinion

Hill had 6 carries for sixteen yards last week

I do not understand this lead back nonsense. It’s four carries at the end of the game

It has more to do with Miller than Hill. Over two seasons Miller has yet to show anything to separate himself from the other backs.

** Cough **

Some folks tried to say so after Mizzou……

Including Coach Grubb……

On sophomore running back Daniel Hill:

"Daniel has been a guy that unfortunately has been a little bit dinged up through the first part of the year. But is a guy that, I don’t know if there’s a guy we were more optimistic about out of spring ball than Daniel. So we’re hoping that that starts to show up a little bit more here and obviously take some of the load off of Jam (Miller), but he’s a really bright player. I think Daniel is a guy that, I know Daniel is a guy that understands pressure pickups. He’s very good in pass protection. He’s got incredibly good hands. A lot of people probably don’t know that about Daniel, but he’s a good athlete. I mean, he was like a state champion, 300-meter hurdle guy. He’s kind of wild, some of the stuff he can do, so we certainly trust him to do all those things."

Vols did the load the box a good bit. Why the hell we didn't throw the ball more in that situation is beyond me.

Grubb's run calls are not high percentage runs. He refuses to use the edges and runs right into the teeth of the D. Its going to be a problem facing a good team. He kills drives but thankfully Ty can bail him out.

It’s because Daniel Hill looks fluid when he runs. Jam does not. Jam looks clunky when he runs and is too often brought down by arm tackles.

They were often but this isn’t a one game problem, the run game has been bad all year. Good chance it’ll come back to bite us one day when we need to ice a game and can’t kill the clock.

Few games ago, y'all said Riley should be no. 1. Then it was miller. The now you say Hill should be no. 1.

I believe it was said Hill was finally healthy now, but I can’t help but think it’s part of the game plan also. He’s really the perfect back for the 4th quarter when the defense is sucking wind.

The problem is you can't really consistently execute combo block run schemes when there are more defenders on the LOS than blockers. Our inside run game is basically just inside zone and duo. Both can be overwhelmed by just not allowing the double team blocks to develop. Outside zone also struggles with this too...
