Ohio State trying something interesting

They are huddling and farting around in between plays more than anybody in the country right now. They ran 57 plays against Minnesota even though they were dominating the game, and there were only 107 plays in the whole game.
I guess the benefit is that it keeps your defense fresher during the game and keeps your whole team fresher later in the season. Cuts down on injuries too. Don't know if this is a winning strategy in the playoffs, however. Random shite and random big plays by the other team and bad breaks become more magnified when there are fewer possessions in a game. It's clear now that they are a way better team than Texas, but that game came down to the end. It will be interesting to see if this is just Ohio State's regular season strategy and their offense will speed up in the playoffs.
I still don't know if Ohio State is for real this season though. You look at how Egbuka is playing in the NFL right now and the two rookie running backs and how many players they had on last year's defense and wonder how the frick they lost 2 games last year. But if Ryan Day can win the championship again this year or get back to the title game, at that point you must give credit where credit is due.

This isn’t something new. A lot of teams do this but they usually don’t have the talent level to do it effectively like Ohio State.

Defenses have been maximized to stop the spread concepts and offenses have been maximized for speed of play and break neck operational pace. Returning to ball control, line of scrimmage domination is happening at college and pro levels.

Case in point is Philly with Hurts. JH was middling at best in 2024 as a passer, but his run game combined with Barkley and a killer defense is what won the league.

I think you answered most of your questions in the original post. Their strategy says more about the Big 10 than OSU imo.
EVERY team runs out the clock in blowouts because it speeds up the game, reduces injury risk, puts less on film etc. OSU is so good that they can get away with it in the 1st half too. They won't use this strategy in the playoffs (against better competition) for the exact reasons you listed above.
The Tex game is different because it was game 1 and teams are usually trying to figure out what they're made of at that point in the season.

Ohio state did it last year too.
Day sees the season as 15+ games a year. If you have 6-8 snaps fewer per game then you save your team an entire game or two throughout the season

At this point they may not have a win over a ranked team going into the CFB playoffs. They can essentially play their 2nd string in every game and win. Must be nice.

Another thing to consider is they haven't needed to go fast.
They've played a weak, weak schedule and have yet to trail in a single game if my memory serves.

I always think fans are dumb. OSU fans who wanted him gone have always been short sighted. He obviously is a good coach who is well liked by his players.

Once you start talking about playing 15 games in a season, building in load management to peak at the right time is a thing. NFL's been game planning that way for years.

Why rush when you play a ton of cupcakes like OSU does, does not make sense to risk injury with more plays..just coast until the playoffs
