Hats off to them. They shut it down after the first quarter. Impressive no matter the team.

Most impressive defensive showing of the DeBoer era for sure. Hopefully they can build off the performance. If this team can consistently play solid defense, the sky is the limit.

It wasn’t just the run defense once the scheme was updated and Smith came back.
Someone might’ve figured out Pavia yesterday.
Without the run game he was making some Milroe level reads under pressure and their TE/WR group absolutely melted with drops.
And coming in Vandy had the 8th best efficiency offense in the country.
It was an absolutely elite 2H for the defense on a day that our offense was completely hopeless in the red zone despite discovering our running game.

Yeah, props to them. I was critical of them when it looked like it was going to be another discombobulated torture-watch, but they really buckled down.

I was pleading for a hitman on Wommack after those first two drives!

Yep. He isn't a good passer behind the sticks at all. Doesn't get through his progressions quickly enough and has limited arm talent. If you can slow down their run game he's not going to win it for them. If you can't slow down their run game he's a gamer who will make plays though. They are essentially a triple option team that throws short passes in lieu of a lot of runs.

This is undoubtedly the sharpest assessment anyone's made yet.

Once Vandy became one dimensional and the offense was forced to pass, they were unable to execute.
I think our defense in base situations not facing a dual threat QB is pretty strong.
Too bad that is not a very often scenario

I'm telling y'all. I'd rather us go down because we get into situations where we can't affect the passer than lose by handoffs, pitches, and option keeps. Our staff should be focusing on making any team with balance to run-leaning attacks forced to pass the ball. Rather go down by making teams throw it than just running the ball.
Considering our pass rush was already a question mark heading into the season then took some serious injury hits once we got into the season, I think that has got to be the strategy until we play a team that demonstrably cannot run the ball like LSU.

had anyone told me this defense would hold vandy to 14 points before the game, i would've lol'd in their face. color me shocked and cautiously hopefully for the future.

For me, there's an impulse to discredit the run defense because it's hard to wrap my head around Vanderbilt being good. But that offense had moved it at will on everyone until they played Bama. Vanderbilt has a difficult schedule, but if you put them in any other conference, they would be in the thick of the playoff hunt. If you doubt that, watch teams like Indiana, which would struggle to reach bowl eligibility in the SEC but is looking to be a back to back playoff team in the Big Ten.

This stat is even slightly skewed since there was a long TD run in there. Let’s call that a coverage bust. Aside from one time pavia gashed us,otherwise the D absolutely stifled them.
I’ve been critical of Womack, but i need to give credit for the positives too. That was winning defense.
