Is blaming NIL going to be a thing now?

First I read Mike Gundy pointing out Oregon's budget for players dwarfed what he could pay before the 69-3 beatdown his pokes suffered.
Now I see Matt Rhule complaining after his huskers lost to Michigan because UM was able to buy more and better players.
I suppose now a coach having a losing season might parlay a lack of resources into another year before getting fired.

NIL and OU going to the SEC really let the air out of Mike Gundy’s tires. You can just tell the man has lost his drive and will to compete.
Maybe losing Boone Pickens hurt as well. Whatever, but Gundy is just checked out.

T. Boone Pickens would have literally bought Gundy and OK State a national championship under the new rules.

I think it's more coaches speaking through the media for fans/boosters to give more.
Losing Underwood was a call to action for our Boosters to give more and that bought us a pretty good roster.

He already gave like 650 million to the school...I think a decent chunk of that was to football....not a good return on his money....but ok state can go eat a bag of dicks.

This is the new world we live in. Figure it out.

It's logical. The schools that can spend the most will have an advantage over the schools that can't.

The only way to try and make it equal is to have a NIL cap.

Yes, just look at Shane Beamer. He blames loses on NIL and his team spends more on NIL than the team that beat him.

Let's not forget Lane saying this week that LSU bought the 3 most expensive DBs in the portal.

The courts have ruled time and again that you cannot limit a kid's earnings

Is it an excuse? Sure. Is it also a reality? Yes. A lot of these coaches aren't talking to the media when they make these kinds of statements. They're talking to their boosters through the media.

Yep. Always has been that way.
I’m looking at TTech right now and wondering how they will finish up this year.

Gundy is cooked.
The ironic thing is now that paying players is actually legal, T Boone is dead. Can you imagine the check he would've stroked now?
It would make Knight / Oregon green with envy.

I didn't know that, first I heard. At least it happened pre game. Mizzou has lost a ton of players to the portal getting out bid and never once did I hear Drink complain about it. There were even rumors that Jayden Daniels was about to sign with Mizzou and LSU swept in last minute. Not a peep from Drink even after he single handedly whooped us.

They look real good this year and spent a lot on the portal. IDK if that is sustainable for them but I would think they have some serious oil money boosters. They are one of the few schools that I could see becoming a powerhouse bc of NIL. I think most of the traditional powerhouses will still thrive in the NIL days

Schools like Nebraska and Oklahoma State have to accept they won't compete with the big programs year in and year out.
They will have to get better at long-term roster building and then go all in every 3 or 4 years with a class in the portal like Ole Miss did in 2024, and hope it works out.
We'll likely see Nebraska go all in, this offseason, with Raiola coming back.
