Why do some players wear oversized or padded helmets?

Not a jab at the gators but I watched some of their cupcake game against USF and the gators had one RB that looked like a bobble head character because his helmet was so big. Also noticed a player that looked like he was wearing a padded cover over his helmet.

I know I know.... player safety, but seriously, what's the reasoning for that?

Guardian helmets. Number 87 was wearing them in the Packers game last night, Romeo Doubs. *Supposedly* helps prevent concussion, and if it works I'm all for it, but right now it just looks idiotic

Have there been any reports of players wearing them getting concussions?

Found this tidbit from Wisconsin School of Medicine

quote:

At a Glance Padded helmet covers did not reduce player concussions in high school football practices. Researchers recommend data-backed interventions like safety training for coaches, extra jaw padding in helmets, employing athletic trainers and limiting contact in practices. Results cannot be generalized to college and pro players due to differences in helmet covers.

Don Beebe wore a protective cap when he played for the Buffalo Bills in the late eighties and early nineties. His looked a lot better than the ones today.

Then don't they all wear them? Seems more like something for players that have had a concussion in the past or more than one while playing college ball. If the later is the case... maybe a player should consider retirement from football.

Mouth pieces and pads are for safety also.... but nobody enforces those.

Rydell helmets have the Riddell InSite System. It has built-in sensors that measure the severity of all of the impacts to the head, along with the location.

It's amazing tech.
