After pouring over the stats, some interesting things I noticed:

1. Auburn only had one negative play.
This was a 14-yard loss when JA was sacked and fumbled… we thankfully recovered the ball.

To only have one play that resulted in negative yardage is very impressive. Contrast that with Baylor who had five such plays.

2. Auburn had very few plays for no gain.
Part of this is a result of not throwing the ball much. You can’t have many incomplete passes for 0 yards if you don’t throw often.

But in total, Auburn had just 12 plays for 0 or negative yards compared to Baylor having THIRTY such plays.

3. Our Median yards per play was dominant.
The above stats feed into this. But I think one of the best, most under-utilized statistics is MEDIAN yards per play.

Average yards per play can be skewed by one or two very big plays. But more often than not, if a team can have a median yards per play value that is +1 or more than the opponent, they will win the game. Auburn was +1.5. Very dominant.

Auburn’s median yards per play was 4.00 compared to Baylor’s 2.50… the Bears no doubt dragged down by all of those no gains and negative plays.

4. Defense needs to tighten up and not allow so many big plays
This is the one negative I have.

Auburn’s defense gave up 21 plays of 10 yards or more. That’s way too many. This is the only reason the game was even close. Auburn had 12 plays of 10+ yards or more.

Baylor had 15 plays go for 15 yards or more… and they had seven plays go for 20 yards or more.

Had Auburn not given up some of these big plays, I think we would have won in a route… like a 4 TD margin win. Baylor’s explosive plays are the only thing that made this game close.

I think if JA can work on his passing game a bit and if our defense can tighten up and not allow so many explosive plays, this team could be really good.

Amazing what a mobile QB does for a college team. Milroe saved Bama the past two seasons.

Baylor also went for it on 4th down SIX times, with several being on their side of the field. They went for it on their own 28 yard line on the opening drive.

Baylor played desperate the entire game.

Yikes. Yeah that’s gotta get cleared up.

Hope this is not the case, but I'm going to play Debbie Downer here and say that it may be more likely that #1 through #3 are more indicative that Baylor is pretty bad rather than Auburn being good.

Hoping it will be a great year, but right now, we've got a sample size of one. Don't think we'll know much more until Oklahoma.

I don’t even think that’s Debbie downer.

Us not being bad is a big positive for me

Didn't Freeze say we missed 30 tackles in the game?

Most interesting stat, we ran the ball on 4 and 1, instead of passing. That maybe a first for Hugh by taking what the defense was giving us.

The OL has improved significantly over prior season.

And that makes a big difference in the offense, as we are witnessing.
It also makes a big difference in insuring the defense remains rested.

Huge difference ….

And they knew it... wasn't a bad offense. Good enough that they exposed plenty of soft spots. I'm guessing they didn't have enough beef to cover the whole field. They went one dimensional from the start. And once our O'line showed up they had no answer for the QB run.

I'm guessing stats for the next two weeks probably shouldn't be taken serious. And rankings won't jump automatically.

Wish our next two games were more middling teams and less of a cupcake festival to uncover those weak spots.

Oklahoma runs the air raid too and will carve us up in Norman unless the secondary takes their heads out of their asses.

If we dont shore up our LBs in coverage, its going to be a long season. Riddick has been very disappointing for a 5 star

Dude what? Riddick was a young role player last year and got alot of praise for balling out in that role. Then he got balled on by a freak middle aged man tight end and still graded out at a nut hair away from a 70 on pff.

He's totally met expectations so far.

The defender should have caught it but just tipped it to the receiver.
