This is already happening, especially with senior graduate transfers.

The student in student athlete has always been a sham. Sure, some took advantage of a great opportunity for a free education, but for those that were important to the success of the program, school was always "optional". Student athletes have a support system to basically make it so they didn't have to do much beyond show up for class to remain eligible. Online learning only made it even less legitimate.

It's time we treat it like the minor leagues and stop pretending it's anything other than that.

I've even more convinced that these elite athletes should break away and form a separate, official minor league (perhaps supplemented by the NFL), and that we should maintain the existing collegiate model for student athletes who want to just play sports and earn a college education.

Eventually it'll be a minor league system that simply leases the facilities and is licensed to use the name of the school. It will no longer be "college" football.

This is what we all demanded, right? I mean, anyone drowning in student loan debt will tell you that full-ride scholarships are worthless.

Athletes driving around in Mercedes Benz on campus with their $$$. Rest of the students eating ramen noodles. Don't you just love the way this is heading.

Yep.

Make them qualify with the rest of the students. I know this doesn't even really happen on Ivy League campuses when Daddy Warbucks can make a call and get junior in, but it is a far cry from where we are now. Many of these student -athletes are not even close to prepared for for a decent academic curriculum, and are shepherded through school taking cakewalk classes.

Baseball is the only sport that does it right imo. You can go pro straight out of high school, but if you choose not to do so, you are not draftable for 2-3 years. Is draftable a word? Well it should be.

Did they ever "go to school" in the first place?

I wouldn't say "always", but certainly not a recent change either.

How would that even work?
Create an entire minor league FB system that does not involve the universities?
How much will these guys get paid playing for some bland minor league team? Would a geographical proximity to the universities even exist?
“Effective 1/1/2027 the LSU Tigers football team will change to the Baton Rouge Tigers with no affiliation to the university”?

It certainly feels like things are going to lead somewhere very different, but the alternative would be a quagmire.

Basically.

A lot of fans thought this would "make things even" and "make the sport more competitive." A lot of them just wanted to change the current system, and when each change didn't magically make their own program a powerhouse, they immediately thought the NEXT big change would be the thing that made their school a powerhouse.

if a high school athlete wants to go straight to the NBA or NFL let them
Let's see how much $ they will command that way
Let's see how they hold up against NFL players right out of high school, majority would get crushed

we already allow it in baseball

Hell, I know of one SEC school where the regular students aren't really students. Majority of tests are online with no proctoring and no enforcement of the school's "honor code."

But it's a big party and the town has experienced a surge in population and the development that comes with it.

Didn't AU have a football player who graduated without being able to read or write?

The team would lease the facilities and license the name. Ownership would be basically the athletic foundations now existing.

The problem with the universities just divesting themselves from the minor league is that they wouldn't be able to come close to filling these 100,000 seat stadiums with fans to watch a bunch of engineering majors play football.
