Which “UT” coach was better? Phil Fulmer or Mack Brown?

Both won a national championship, ending long title droughts. Both lost national championship games to dynasties (Fulmer in 1997 to Nebraska and Brown in 2009 to Alabama)
Both lost painful conference championship games with BCS title game implications (2001).
Both won 2 conference titles. The Big12 wasn’t a joke when Mack Brown was coaching

Never really thought about it tbh, why is mizzou in the SEC again?

Mack Brown is one of the better men that has coached CFB. It was hard to hate him back in the day.

They also both had issues with a rival in big games, each losing five straight to either Florida or Oklahoma. Almost all of those games were top ten matchups. As to the question, I’ll lean toward Mack because of what he did during his first stint at UNC.

I’m gonna say Fulmer. He had to play against better competition than Mack Brown. While at Tennessee, Fulmer went against Saban, Spurrier, Richt, Stallings, Holtz, Tuberville, Miles, and Urban all in conference. That’s a lot harder than anything Texas went against. Also coaching Texas is way easier than coaching Tennessee from a resources and in state recruiting point of view. I’m biased but I think it’s fulmer easily

Yes, it was hard to hate MB. But the last couple of years of his tenure we certainly pulled it off…

Mack Brown. He turned around three programs. Tulane went from 1 win in 1985 to 6 wins in 1987. He did a great job at both UNC (first stint) and Texas.

Bob stoops owned Mac Brown. He won one title in 16 years of coaching at Texas. He was a good coach at a program that had no reason being mediocre. He had a lot of 10 win seasons in an average conference. Phil was a pain in Bamas arse. Tennessee was at their best with him at the helm. I’d give Phil the nod

Pound for pound, Mack Brown.

He did from 00-04, but overall in their 15 meetings against each other, Stoops was 9-6.

Mack Brown mostly because Fulmer was a gigantic douche

Fulmer pays people wit MackDonalds bags full of cash. He’s the true mustard tiger. Brown can’t compete with that

That’s pretty bad. You play 15 times and you lose almost 70% of the games to your rival. That gets most coaches fired

That's a pretty big leap to say he "coached" against Saban. Fulmer looked like a fool and got his doughnuts bashed in for a brief 2 years, vs. Saban, and then was fired.
Let's not color it orange and try to make it seem as if Fulmer was in some long, existential struggle against Saban in which many brave battles were fought.

That would be Les Miles.
Sure, it was very much a battle in the beginning between Miles and Saban. From '12-'16, Saban finally got the upper hand and won 5 straight.
'07-'11 though, Miles had Saban with a 3-2 margin.
It was great competition.

Mack Brown lost to OU 63-14 then followed it up with another loss to OU 65-13.. I know Fulmer had his Florida problem and Payton Manning never beat them but he wasn't getting beat badly like that.
