All Time Baseball Program Rankings

Now that the season has come to a close, here are my updated all-time program rankings. This takes into account all seasons since the NCAA Tournament began, but it does reward recent success far more than it does years long ago when far fewer teams participated in the Tournament.
This works off a formula so I’m just going by what my metric spits out.
Rank. Team (NCAA Tournament appearances / CWS Appearances / National Titles)- total points
1. Texas (64/38/6)- 403
2. LSU (37/20/8)- 357
3. USC (38/21/12)- 329
4. Miami (50/25/4)- 314
5. Arizona St (42/21/5)- 266
6. Cal St. Fullerton (41/18/4)- 263
7. Florida St (62/24/0)- 251
8. Arizona (44/18/4)- 238
9. Stanford (37/19/2)- 227
10. Oklahoma St (49/20/1)- 196
11. Florida (40/14/1)- 183.1
12. South Carolina (35/11/2)- 182.5
13. Mississippi St (40/12/1)- 156.2
14. Oregon St (24/8/3)- 155.2
15. Arkansas (36/12/0)- 141.6
15. Oklahoma (41/11/2)- 141.6
17. North Carolina (37/12/0)- 141.5
18. Clemson (47/12/0)- 139.4
19. Vanderbilt (23/5/2)- 121.4
20. Rice (23/7/1)- 110.9
21. Ole Miss (26/8/1)- 109.8
22. Virginia (21/7/1)- 109.6
23. Texas A&M (38/8/0)- 107.3
24. Minnesota (32/5/3)- 102.6
25. UCLA (26/6/1)- 100.5
Other SEC:
27. Tennessee (15/7/1)- 93.8
28. Georgia (17/6/1)- 86.6
33. Auburn (25/6/0)- 71.8
35. Missouri (22/6/1)- 70.1
38. Alabama (28/5/0)- 65.8
64. Kentucky (10/1/0)- 22.8
I’m sure the LSU fans will have a completely rational response, but the bottom line is that 2 additional national titles are not enough to overcome Texas having 27 more NCAA Tournament appearances and 18 more appearances in Omaha.
Going into the 1991 season, LSU would have ranked #27 in this metric… 8th of the current SEC programs. Since ‘91, what LSU has done is amazing… there is greater distance between them and the #2 team since 1991 (Miami) than there is #2 and the #31 team since ‘91 (Texas Tech). That’s pretty unbelievable.
And while my metric rewards success from the Super Regional Era more so than eras past, baseball did have almost a 50-year history before LSU won their first title. Texas has enough all time success that they can still hold that top spot.
This works off a formula so I’m just going by what my metric spits out.

What would Arkansas' ranking be if they had caught the foul ball in '18?
Posted on 6/30/25 at 4:22 pm to AUTiger789
LSU has won 8 CWS titles, UTrans has won 6.
LSU has won the CWS in 40% of visits to Omaha.
UTrans has won the CWS in 16% of visits to Omaha.
You tried

Going is great. Winning is different.
Maybe ask Texas fans how many appearances they would trade for two more Championships?
Doesn't it speak volumes that Texas has almost twice as many Tournament and CWS appearances and less hardware?
Legitimately love the metric though. Seeing USC in 3rd is nice.

Sorryneaux is comin’ for you baw. Your metric was not kind to debaseVols
But, seriously:
Per you:
“it does reward recent success far more than it does years long ago when far fewer teams participated in the Tournament.”
Does your metric reward old tournament appearances MORE, since fewer teams got in, so it was harder to make the tournament then?

And Texas would give up all 27 of those tournament appearances and 18 appearances in Omaha for 2 more NC.

Why do this to yourself?

Hogs would be ranked 13th… behind South Carolina but just ahead of Mississippi State.

Ok. But if we tweak that metric to make championships 100x more valuable, LSU might pass Texas but you’d fall back behind USC who has 12 National Titles to your 8.
Are you saying USC is a better all time program than LSU?

There are 57 teams with more NCAA Tournament appearances than the BaseVols. When you only have 15 total trips to the NCAA Tourney, you’re fighting from behind. Their national title pushes them up to #27 all time but it’s hard to come back from the lack of postseason experience.

Hey you’re that Auburn RPI guy right!?!?
Sometimes the eye test is ok. This is like people who claim Michigan is the GOAT college football program based on shite that happened before color television that most here weren’t alive for.
In my lifetime LSU has won 8 National championships. Texas fans 6 years older than me have been alive for 2.
I’m good.

Yes. Literally only an AU fan would rate a program that has 50% more NCs then the next best program as 3rd all time. USC has twice (12) the number of NCs that Texas has (6) and you ranked them behind them. Only an AU fan thinks NCs have that little value…smh

Oh tampon… Michigan is #5 in my all-time football rankings so no one is saying they are the GOAT. They also won a national title 2 years ago. Does the Bayou still not have color tv?

With age comes wisdom and you’re a walking demonstration of this.

Alabama has almost 1,000 more wins than Auburn in baseball.
