In my opinion, the regionality of CFB was its most significant aspect. It’s almost entirely gone. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved our short stint in the SEC, we’ve had major success. Y’all boys are unintentionally hilarious. Though, I’d be all for Texas rejoining a SouthWest centric conference for the good of college athletics.
Same goes for USC and Oregon. Like wtf is that shite? Something went terribly wrong if USC is playing a noon game in New Jersey in October. Historic programs like FSU and Miami are currently like polar bears drifting on melting slabs of ice. Stanford & Cal, collegiate athletic giants clawing to keep the lights on.
There has to be something that can be done to fix this. I don’t care if we have to share a conference with Arizona or Kansas. That’s what made college sports great. Regional styles, cultures, fanbases, etc. Texas & OU are star brands that can power their own solar system. Them joining the SEC just seems like a waste in retrospect, the SEC was full of star power already. I’m just rambling, see yall in the SEC title game.

You are correct with Regionality.
In specific cases long distance rivalries like ND and USC work.
But WVU playing Arizona state will eventually kill off WVU if they don’t get into a regional hub bases conference system again.
Or some kind of four 16-team leagues at most.
I’ve bounced some league ideas but Josh pate has a pretty good handle on it.

Hell, even a program like Texas A&M. In 2012, the prospect of the SEC meant maximizing the potential of their athletics. Utilizing the SEC/ESPN exposure to take their program to the next level, on par with their regional peers. In the NIL era, do they really need to be in the SEC? I’d argue they have the resources to generate that buzz on their own. The Trio of Texas, OU, and A&M could shift the pendulum overnight. Even a Texas Tech in 2025 is geared up more than 60% of the SEC to compete at the highest level with their resources. So why not? The road trips might suck initially, but frick it.

one of the few mature posts you will see on the Rant. What you are getting at is what drives NIL money and everything else about college sports. If regional fan bases lose their connection to their teams, the money will eventually go away. Like you said SOMETHING has to be done.

I hated most of the additions.
But, while A&M doesn’t need the resources, they fit in really well with the SEC immediately. As much as I hate A&M they have been a good addition. I can’t say the same about Missouri, OU and Texas. They made no sense. Missouri was OK because no one really knew about it (and some people still don’t even know or care), but OU and Texas came in and fricked everything up.

So very true. I’d prefer the SEC to go back to its original 10 (Bama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, MS State, Florida, Georgia, Vandy, Tenn, & Kentucky). Play a 9 game schedule where everyone plays each other every single year. I didn’t mind the Arkansas and So Carolina additions, but once A&M and Missouri were added, we lost what the SEC really should be (A conference with southeastern US roots).
The imbalanced schedules. The not playing certain teams for years and years, and coast to coast conferences makes college football conferences a joke.
At least the SEC kept states that all join, but what the Big Ten has done, along with the destruction of the PAC 10 has really hurt college football bad. There is no universe where Oregon, Washington, and USC should be playing Rutgers, Maryland, and Indiana in conference games.
The Big Ten is a

The SEC is still what I would consider regional, even though the umbrella opened up more.
The only thing I might sorta miss is Texas Tech and Ok State, but having Aggie, Arky and Boomer in the same league is always a plus.
True - the Big Ten is a geographical dart board, but those people up there have to stretch out farther in order to find others with equal enthusiasm.
The southeast part of the country couldn't be more sports crazy, and that exuberance does pretty well stretch from Texas to the lower Atlantic coast.

Pate's list is decent but OK State should be SWC and BYU Big 8. BYU-Utah and Oklahoma-OK State should be conference rivals, Rice shouldn't have a program

True, but unfortunately we share this one. STTDB right?

regionality will return
Major conferences will get to large and they will end up dividing into regional/historocal pods

Completely agree w this. I actually love being in the SEC, but the reality is that things would work out better if conferences maxed out at 10. Everyone plays everyone in conference; you no longer need a conf championship game (can have tiebreakers like it worked for decades). A 10-team SEC could still schedule head-to-heads versus another conference each year, maybe on a rotating basis (i.e. on one weekend in Sept the 10 SEC teams face off against the 10 SWC/Big 10/ACC teams).
Whatever... obviously I'm just Joe Fan and have no say. $/greed has always been the driver since expansion started.

Are you worried you will catch a harder schedule in a few years?

You can't have your cake and eat it too. It's not the SEC teams that have left their natural domain; it's the shorthorns. You left all your Texas rivals behind, and that was purely a business decision. And you guys were trying to get to the West Coast 15 years ago, but were turned down.
BAMA's schedule looks as "regional" as it ever has. Frankly, you sound a little homesick.
