Dude is a hit machine that should have been called up at least two years ago

Don’t blame the Rays. Blame the Mets.

Mangum was ridiculous at State. And he was absolutely terrifying against us. I think he hit over 400 for his career against Ole Miss. And they always seemed to be clutch hits. And he could field. And steal bases. And he was a solid guy who would be an asset to a clubhouse.
But his draft position was dog shite. So I remember asking someone who was in rhe baseball world why scouts were down on hin.
And the guy said: Because he doesn't hit home runs....
I'm glad he's doing well

Fastest white boy I've ever seen in baseball.

Yep. Kind of a hard to believe. The guy is a winner on the baseball field. Not sure why he has languished in the Minors for so long.

Pro sports is so fricked. It's like all they want to do is appeal to the casual fan any longer. I swear one of these days sports fans are going to get fed up. College too.
Mangum was a joy to watch play. Not so much against your team.

Mangum would’ve been in the MLB hall of fame if he’d been born about 15-20 years earlier. His game reminds me of Ichiro

Jake Mangum was essentially our head coach while he was here. He played for Cohen, Cann, Henderson and Lemonis in his 4 years with a batting title, SEC hits record, 4 supers and 2 CWS.
There’s a story that Lemonis was speaking to the team before a big SEC series and he was talking about their ace and said something along the lines of
“This is why you come play in the SEC, to face pitchers like this.”
And Mangum said “Nah coach, he came to the SEC to pitch to me.”

Jacob Melton is going to be fun to watch for my Astros.

Based on what? .771 OPS in AAA for a 27-year-old is fine, but it's nothing extraordinary.

Hit .297 in the minors, it's not like you'd look at that and think slam dunk
But incredibly consistent. You'd just want to see him more aggressive on base stealing, which a lot of organizations limit to keep minor leaguers healthy.
He's a good fit for a team like the rays that always do better with scrappers that get on base and into scoring position and can't rely on the expensive sluggers.

I’ve noticed that a lot of guys in the 2018 and 2019 draft class had their careers and minor league timelines really impacted by Covid. The cancelled season in 2020, closing all facilities, then the reorganization of entire minor league system in 2021 caused a lot of chaos.
He was already an older player entering the draft at age 23, so he was 25 by the time he played his first pro game in 2021, but he quickly worked his way up to AAA by 2022.
Then he was traded around a lot of different organizations. I noticed he also missed some time with injuries. Nothing major, but it might have hampered his development.
2022 - Mets
2023 - Marlins
2024 - Rays
I can’t believe he’s already 29 years old. At some point his prospect status probably evolved from a talented prospect to a professional journeyman minor leaguer.

Their analytics nerds didn’t think he hit enough home runs or walked enough.
I’m so glad he’s proving them wrong and having a good start to his rookie year.

He led AAA in batting average last year

I was responding to the statement that he should have been called up two years ago, that's why I noted his 2023 numbers were nothing special.
Edit to add: he absolutely did not lead AAA in batting average last year. Where do you people come up with this BS?

MLB teams seemingly only want OFs who hit HRs, and that's just not part of his game despite him being a hitting machine at every level of baseball he's ever played. His age didn't help him either.
I fear Tre Morgan is going to have the similar issues getting called up. He plays 1B (at an elite level) and corner OF but doesn't hit HRs.
