Why not have a portal draft
You enter the portal you are slotted for certain amounts where picked

It may deter players from entering portal

Just get rid of the portal imo.

I understand why the big successful programs want it to go away, but it’s the only way many teams can be competitive.

Balance out the money players get paid and the incentive to leave a team for a raise could weaken the portal.

I like the portal. It fixes unforeseeable depth issues for a lot of teams. The small hand-full of $20mil payrolls is the only thing messing up the game right now. NIL in general is dumb. The players aren’t worth a dollar without the universities.
Let D2 have NIL and see if the best talemt actually goes there.

You would have to have a CBA permitting it. Drafts are a restraint of trade.

It also can cause unforeseeable depth issues, like when the Marshall coach took a new job at Southern Miss and took all the players with him.

This may be the worst solution I've read for any problem on this site.

Haven’t we always allowed that after a coaching change? I don’t remember.

It is illegal, and the courts would overrule it.

The transfer portal is forever.

The courts have already ruled on the transfer portal. An athlete's transfer access cannot be limited. They have to have the same transfer rights as a regular student. This is why the schools and NCAA's hands are currently tied. Any rule they come up with that inhibits an athlete's ability to freely transfer is a violation of their constitutional rights, so the courts say.

People say this but do not look at the reality of it. It does not help the smaller teams be competitive. It hurts them. It helps the lower end big 4 programs.

Look at 202324 FAU basketball program that made the final 4. Great team made up of diamonds in the rough. 2025 comes along and 4 out 5 of their starters are starting for schools with big athletic programs who could afford to pay them.

How did that make FAU more competitive?

If transfer and NIL had been around in late 80s do you think Brett Farve would have stayed at Southern Miss? No he would have been paid to transfer.

The transfer portal alone is not a problem.

The NILs alone are not the problem.

The combo is killing college sports.

While a draft might not pass legal muster, a match program, like they have with medical residencies, would.

Instead of the programs drafting, the players could select up to 8 schools that they would like to attend, the programs then rank their preferences, and it could even be weighted based on the prior year (like the NFL draft), and then algorithm would assign the teams.

That also would be illegal. You cannot restrict a player's choice.

Currently yes, but congress could grant the NCAA a waiver for college athletics like they did for the hospitals and medical residents. Once instituted, then you would declare college athletes to be employees, and then it would satisfy.

The only one with the power to control the transfer portal is the Supreme Court.

Not if the exemption codified into law. This has already been through court and was settled.

The agents/players would keep challenging it until they found a judge who would strike it down.
