Something just dawned on me re>Nico …

… that all of us have been missing because we keep looking at this through a normal prism.
By signing with UCLA, even for less money, Nico is going home. Where domineering bully control freak daddy who runs every aspect of his life can be on the scene all the time, large and in charge, and perpetually practice his control freakishness.
Of course I could be out in the ether, but it sort of makes sense …

Thx for the insight bro.

YW
. I said I could be in the ether, but I think a lot of people here are either not getting or ignoring the family dynamic in this situation. The daddy controls the son with marionette strings.

100% agree. Nico has zero say in what he wants to do. He is probably a really good kid. This is 100% the dad and the agent. His football career is basically over even if he lands at UCLA. Maybe he can pick back up volleyball again. Case of dad overplaying his hand

But everyone here keeps dismissing that and saying Nico is an adult and should stand up to his dad. Nico may be a native US citizen but he didn’t grow up in a culture which permits that. That’s not a defense of him, IMO it’s the reality of what is going on here.

Hey I upvoted your insult.

You are joking right? He’s almost 21 years old and is a grown man. He has say in his life and if he is choosing to allow his dad to run it that’s his choice. 15 is a kid, 20 is an adult (albeit a young adult prone to making mistakes).
Absolutely insane the amount of coddling people on here act like Nico is just some powerless pawn in this situation.

The family dynamic in this Iamaleavea situation does seem important.
Whatever were the motivations that caused him to attempt to hold Tennessee hostage, and ultimately cause his dismissal from that team, looks to have clearly reduced his value in the football marketplace. This reduced value is the key aspect to me, and the only thing that will bring about change in the current chaotic college football “recruiting “ landscape.

Again you are looking at this through a conventional prism. He comes from a culture where dad is God and it’s not unheard of for children to remain in dad’s household forever, even after they get married and have kids. Telling dad to get fricked if dad is out of line doesn’t come as easy as it would for someone from, say, Temple, Texas. I don’t think Nico is without fault here but I think dad is the biggest villain.

Maybe dad is the biggest villain
And I can agree with you there.
I just don’t subscribe to a culture of 20 year old men doing adult things but blaming other people for making their decisions. If dad told him to commit a crime is it because dad is his God? Where is the line? I just don’t agree with that nonsense he’s an adult in the eyes of the law by several years and he is able, capable, and willing to make a decision. Saying it’s hard because he is his father doesn’t absolve him of responsibility and culpability. A lot of things are hard in this world, doesn’t change the fact you own your decisions and you alone when your an adult.
Likely we are just going to disagree here

The fact his dad is still in the picture amazes me. That normally doesn’t happen with them

We are actually closer to agreement than disagreement. It may be tough because of his culture but at some point you have to stand up and be a damn man.

We are all better off now because of this post.

I think what everybody is kinda skimming over is that if his dad does call the shots, he also would have made the decision for him to go to Tennessee in the first place and maybe Nico really didn't want to go there anyway.

I'm willing to bet Nico doesn't have a real agent. Because a real, professional agent wouldn't have advised doing what Nico did. That dumba$$ move sounds more like a greedy father who doesn't know how to negotiate at the adult table.

Literally no one here knows the dynamics of the Iamaleava family. Tennessee lost an above average QB at an inconvenient time. I suspect they have another above average QB on the roster or will find one here in the portal. He's not the first star player to be told to kick rocks (Quinshon and Ole Miss) and he won't be the last.

A lot of the NIL "agents" are are pretenders for sure. A lot of the NIL collectives are also doing some shady stuff.
