quote:

This recent contractual renewal wasn't the first demand coming from the Iamaleava side. During the tail end of the season, there was already some planning ahead that was happening for the support system for the talented signal caller, according to those around his inner circle. Those conversations centered around the offensive line, which was a unit that needed some revamping for the Volunteers.

quote:

The demands were spearheaded by Nic Iamaleava, Nico’s father. In their familiar hierarchy, his dad has the majority of say regarding what he believes to be the best for Nico and their entire family, and they are expected to follow his lead. Along with Nico’s agent, the two of them wanted to be guaranteed that his son would be better protected, and wanted to see the actions to follow.

quote:

Tennessee did hit the transfer portal for offensive linemen this past winter, which included the additions of Sam Pendleton (Notre Dame) and Wendell Moe Jr. (Arizona). It appears that more support was wanted, and that meant that the Iamaleava side now wanted more benefits to stay. All demands were not met.

quote:

Even before spring practice, the wheels had begun turning around this whole situation. In fact, contact with other schools began back around the winter portal window. Most just didn’t know it.

quote:

According to multiple sources, the duo of Nic Iamaleava and their agent were already shopping around to generate interest for Nico. Oregon was amongst the schools they contacted, but that was where things started backfiring for the Iamaleava camp.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning reached out to Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel regarding them reaching out directly. As you can imagine, that wasn’t well received. The fracturing began, and this was the start of even more lies and deceptions to follow.

quote:

Some of the other schools that were reached out to in the winter window were Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, and Texas Tech. The Fighting Irish, like Oregon, were not interested. Making the move for both USC and UCLA didn't make much sense at the time. Texas Tech at least listened, but also didn’t make a move.

quote:

The shame of this all is that Nico wasn’t privy to the majority of what was happening behind the scenes. This is just how things are managed in their family dynamic. He is typically used as an important piece in a game of leveraging, deception, and is expected to follow without any pushback.

quote:

With the intention to let the process play out, everything remained quiet for the next few months. Spring ball began, and things continued to be calm on the surface level. Unannounced to both Nic and Nico, their agent went behind their back to work negotiations once again. When he overplayed his hand, things got messy quickly. He attempted to save some face with the family by blaming the Tennessee side.

quote:

The story eventually made its way to On3, not via the Tennessee coaching staff or program.
When the story from Nakos came out, the Iamaleava family was completely blindsided by it. They all felt deceived, and Nico and other parts of his family were especially affected. With a lack of information about everything that was taking place, Nico was once again relegated to following his dad and his orders to not show up to practice last Friday.

quote:

Once that happened, the relationship was to the point of no repair. With Coach Heupel and Tennessee furious about the situation, they made the only decision that made any sense at that point, moving on from their talented signal caller. Tennessee AD Danny White was a major part of that final decision, and sounds like he gave the last nudge to cut the cord.

The all spells out that Nic Iamaleava is a meddling fool and the worst kind of helicopter parent imaginable.

Good riddance.

Point of the whole thing is an attempt to scrub some of the stench off NICO and Daddy, who were victimized by an out of control agent.

Probably.

It is interesting that the Dad lashed out to Nakos and then immediately proved him right.

I bet On3 will trash them any chance they get

So the agent just woke up and asked the school for more money, without talking to his client first ?

I find that hard to believe. Is that normal in the agent world and I just haven’t heard about it?

Dan Lanning just became one of my favorite coaches. frick that piece of shite family. And I call BUUUUULLSHIT that Nico didn’t know any of this was going on and that the agent went behind their back asking for more.

I think we all need to ease up on Nico.

He's gonna be a great all-SWAC QB in 2026 before his CFL career.

It's pretty clear that Tennessee didn't buy that story.

Nico’s dad seems like the opposite of Tua’s dad in terms of how their family deals with basically everything.

If true, I feel really bad for the kid. It actually says a lot about him to respect his father and stay quiet. I'd still tell them to kick rocks, but I hate it for the kid.

Nah, it is an effort to scapegoat the agent and garner some sympathy for Nico. It will probably work enough to get someone to take him.

Only an idiot would fall for the idea that this agent was doing it in a manner in which Nic was completely unaware.

Nic is poison, and will pull this shite everywhere his kid goes until he’s either humbled or his kid is considered too poisonous to touch.

Soooo....they're like pretty much any traditional culture up until a few decades ago?

This reporter would be mystified by all the men on my dad's side of the family in Louisiana.

There is no saving college football at this point. There is no organizational authority to set the rules and structure of the sport. The courts castrated the NCAA and now we have stories of agents and family members in contract negotiations and no one bats an eye. We’ve got a transfer portal with virtually no restrictions that has opened the door to complete and total unrestricted free agency. There’s a reason it doesn’t exist in the professional leagues.

A lot of our beat reporters have said Nico is a great kid even after all this. I actually do believe his dad is the problem. He wouldn’t be the first player who was utterly fricked over by family handling their affairs poorly.

I don’t buy the rogue agent did the second round of shopping behind our backs though. That’s just them trying to save some face.

The answer I got to my Google search was AI generated so take it as you will, but apparently the article is dead on about the dominance of the father in Polynesian culture even after the kids are grown, it’s common for kids to keep living in their father’s household even after they are married, even today. So there could be some truth there although I doubt Nico was completely innocent and uninvolved.

But I think Big Daddy may be getting a lesson in FAFO.
