Respectful inquiry…
I’ve been traveling to Auburn away games since early 80’s and looking forward to our first trip to Norman this year.
We met, hosted and tailgated with some great folks from Oklahoma last year in Auburn.
I make travel reservations early in the year to avoid the hassle and increase cost as the season gets closer.
I live in the north Georgia mountains in an area that was predominantly Cherokee prior to the Trail of Tears. The valley that we live in was once a passage for De Soto (Bama fans…not the car!) as well as one of the routes taken on the trail as North Carolina,Tennessee and Georgia was “displaced”. Rich in history.
As one with continued interest to learn more of the true history of Native Americans can someone please give me some insight, reliable web information, personal advice as to areas to visit that are deeper than main tourist spots?
Flying to Oklahoma City and staying 4-5 days either before or after the game.,
Thank you!

If you're familiar with the history of the Comanche and/or have read Empire of the Summer Moon, the Quanah Parker Star House is due west of Lawton. It is privately owned so all you can do is view it from the outside.
Also Fort Sill is in or just outside of Lawton. Geronimo is buried in one of the cemeteries on post.
Most of the Cherokee tribe (which you would be most familiar with from the Trail of Tears) are centered closer to Tulsa if I remember correctly.

Every casino in Oklahoma is on a reservation. There are plenty around the state. Within close distance to Norman, you have Riverwind, Goldsby Gaming Center, Newcastle.
Although not Native American related, I highly recommend visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial (1995 Federal Building Bombing). It’s a place where you just don’t have words but can only reflect.

You must partake of Braum's while in Oklahoma. It's the law.

The further west you go (Comancheria territory) or SE of OKC the more historical landmarks and that sort of stuff you’ll find. It’s not close to OKC, though. They do have a cool Native American museum downtown area. SE OK is beautiful but you will be in the sticks. Western OK just tall grass but at least it has I-40.

One of my favorite books. Taylor Sheridan bought the rights to it and is doing a mini series. I’m glad they didn’t try to shove it all into a two hour movie

Glad you'll make the trip!
Check out the First Americans museum.
If you want to stay close to campus, I highly recommend The Noun hotel. 2-minute walk to Campus Corner, bar & restaurant variety, pre-game activities, about 10 minute walk to the stadium.
If you plan to stay in OKC, check out the Omni as it is short distance to Bricktown and adjacent to Scissortail park. We've done weekend staycations at the Omni, it's got a couple nice restaurants and a pool with full bar service on the 3rd story overlooking the park.
If you're bringing kids, maybe consider the Okana Resort. Funded by the Chickasaw Nation, it is roughly adjacent to the First American museum and near downtown/Bricktown.

As noted above the 1st Americans Museum is a must. So is the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Both are fantastic and you will learn a lot. The 1st American Museum has a cafe that serves Native American food as well. Also Cattlemen's steakhouse in Stockyards OKC is a must for any traveler.

If you like history this is definitely worth reading about!
The Osage Indians were extremely wealthy, due to oil, which subsequently made them high value targets. Check out the FBI case linked below.

Also of interest...The Drummond Family..ie Pioneer Woman has a questionable past regarding how they acquired so much land.

Yes it is. I live in SE Oklahoma in Choctaw Nation territory. Beautiful land, no neighbors and little to no law or authority.
I haven't been to OKC in 5 years and I dont have a reason to go back. I enjoy SE Oklahoma much more.
Food--nothing much of note. Maybe an onion burger around OKC, they're kind of "famous."
Just the two cents from someone living in Oklahoma, but not from Oklahoma.

RV parking is at the Lloyd Noble Center Parking lot.
As far as actual Native American stuff.... OKC and Norman are both in what was known as the "Unassigned Lands" which was part of the famous 1889 Land run of the Boomers and Sooners... But the Chickasaws Native American Museum and Resort is right next to downtown OKC.
There are some Native American Tribal headquarters that are within a short drive of OKC. By contacting them you could perhaps make trips to visit tribal visitor centers and the like.
The tribes that are within about a half hour of OKC are Cheyenne Arapaho (north of El Reno). To the east, the Kickapoo, Absentee Shawnee, Potowatami tribes are around Shawnee (thirty minutes to the east).
Anadarko OK is about an hour and a half away and they have five tribal headquarters there.

If you want to know Cherokee history in OK and even before, go to this State of Oklahoma run website and it has over 3,400 references. Also go to home page and it has all kinds of history that relates.
Digital Praire LINK
And another good one is OK History. You can find so much old stuff here run by historical society.
