That 2011 defense still makes me shake my head with pride...

I was thinking about them just now and started to re-visit the numbers and superlatives of that super elite squad. They played so well together and reminded me so much of a python or boa constrictor. They'd give you yards at the beginning but they gave up fewer and fewer with each passing possession until you were finally unable to move the football a single yard.
vs. Kent State (48-7)
Gave up just 90 yards and six first downs. Their one and only touchdown came from an interception Alabama's Philip Sims threw that was returned to the one yard line.
@ #23 Penn State (27-11)
Half of Penn State's 251 total yards (and all 11 of their points) came on their first and last possessions of the game. They managed just 126 yards of offense on all their remaining drives.
vs. North Texas (41-0)
Alabama kept North Texas under 100 yards of total offense until their final drive of the game where the back-ups stopped the Mean Green on the goal line to preserve the shutout.
vs. #14 Arkansas (38-14)
Arkansas's prolific offense was held to just 226 yards of total offense and 14 first downs. 121 of their 226 yards came on those two scoring drives.
@ #12 Florida (38-10)
Florida was held to just nine first downs and 222 yards of total offense. The Gators scored all 10 points in the first quarter and would gain only 107 more yards in the final three quarters of action.
vs. Vanderbilt (34-0)
Alabama would hold Vanderbilt to 190 total yards and eight first downs in the Tide's second shut out of the season. The Commodores finished just 1-10 on third down conversions that night.
@ Ole Miss (52-7)
Alabama's vaunted defense held Ole Miss to 141 total yards of offense and nine first downs. Ole Miss would gain 72 yards on five plays and score a touchdown on their first possession. They would gain just 69 yards on the remainder of their possessions.
vs. Tennessee (37-6)
Tennessee gave Alabama a hard time in the first half, with the Tide taking a 7-6 lead into the locker room. The Vols gained six first downs in the first two quarters. In the second half, the Tide completely shut Tennessee down as the Volunteer offense failed to gain a single first down in the second half, finishing with 155 total yards of offense.
vs. #1 LSU (6-9)
Alabama lost the "Game of the Century" in overtime, but the Tide defense did everything they needed to do to win the game for Alabama. They held the LSU offense to 239 total yards and 15 first downs. The Tide's special teams and ill-timed turnovers on offense would ultimately decide this game in favor of LSU.
@ Mississippi State (24-7)
Alabama's defense once again put on a tremendous performance, holding Mississippi State to 131 total yards and nine first downs. A kick return deep into Alabama territory set up Mississippi State for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to prevent the shut out.
vs. Georgia Southern (45-21)
Alabama's worst defensive performance of the season would see the triple option offense of the Eagles gaining 341 total yards, 21 points, and 14 first downs. To be fair to the Alabama defense, one Georgia Southern score came off a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
@ #24 Auburn (42-14)
The Alabama defense held Gus Malzahn's gimmicky offense to 140 total yards, nine first downs, and zero offensive scores. The two Auburn touchdowns came off of a fumble recovery in the end zone and a kickoff return for a touchdown.
vs. #1 LSU (21-0)
The iconic rematch in New Orleans saw Alabama hold the top-ranked LSU Tigers to 92 total yards and five first downs. The LSU offense crossed the 50-yard line only once the entire game and were promptly thrown back across it several plays later. The third and final shut out of the season for the 2011 Alabama defense.

The were dominant for sure and destroyed every offense that they played. The Arkansas QB was the only really good QB that the defense faced.
Completely healthy, I would take the 2016 defense over the 2011 defense.

My favorite team, by far. Hightower and Upshaw seemed to know every play that was coming. I truly miss defense like that

that was truly a great defense

As I recall, that one crossing of the 50-yard-line was well into the third quarter?
I loved the story going around after the game that it took the LSU team much longer than usual to get back to Baton Rouge after the game that night, because some smarty-pants painted a 50-yard-line across the interstate.

The best part about them finally crossing the 50 is that they ended up getting sacked behind the 50 like two plays later

Not sure if what they did actually counts as crossing

First thing I thought to myself when seeing the title to the thread.

We apparently have a very sad LSU fan lurking on the site.

Can't recall seeing that one before. Awesome!

Yeah, that was when Bama football was the Bama football I want to remember. A bunch of bad mofos out there headhunting and taking pride in not letting the other team across the goal line. And taking it personally.
I am anything but a fan of Ray Lewis, but he used to refer to it as being "pissed off for greatness". That's what's been missing in T-town for too long.
And that 2016 unit on D deserved better, but finally broke down and wore out in the 4th when the offense couldn't get first downs and the OC forgot about the running game. A damned shame. I doubt we'll ever see anything close to those defenses again at Alabama. Certainly not until we see some
bad@$$es up front like those teams had.

Only giving up 106 points an entire year is absurd.... Especially when you play 6 ranked games and the BCS runner up twice.
I wonder what other historic teams in the modern era (bama and non bama) have even came close to that defense?

Close call. Maybe the D? But I know one thing: the fans would definitely be the winners.

I was there- sat on the 50 yd line.
MFBATR had wore them down, and they didn't want to tackle him. It really was as easy as running the ball down the field, but we decided to let MM throw a trick play pass for INT instead of letting AJ and MFBATR finish off the drive.
Left the stadium in a shocked silence. It was eerily quiet leaving the stadium.

Showing my age but 1961 was pretty good. Gave up 25 points all season, pitched six shutouts, most points given up in a game was seven, went 11-0.

15 D was pretty damned good as well. They were developing a completely contributive two deep rotation for every unit that really came into its own in 16 and 17.
