1998.

Just shows Tennessee is a 3rd rate program.

Same time period these SEC schools have still been in the hunt for a national title on Christmas day more than once.
1.Auburn
2. Alabama
3. LSU
4. Florida
5. Georgia
6. Texas
7. Oklahoma

I actually think this is an overly complicated way of describing Tennessee’s championship struggles, but I’m all in just to dump all over their pathetic football brand…bravo sir

That's a lot of effort to state that Tennessee is a better program than Ole Miss.

He’s an Alabama fan who can’t get over the fact that Fulmer was 10-5-1 against the Tide as HC at Tennessee.

Thank you so much for that illuminating info! What a major contribution you make to this board with your current essential information. I know you do immaculate research, but you're wrong. Shocking, I know.

Here's a funny (but true) stat - you can remove the seasons we had Spurrier and Urban coaching and the Vols still have a losing record all-time to UF.

1997
1998

The last year before the BCS began, 1997, the Vols came out of the SECCG ranked #3. Just ahead was Nebraska at #2. Michigan was #1 and locked into the Rose Bowl. Because 1 and 2 couldn't meet, the bowl alliance designated the Orange Bowl as the national championship bowl between 2 and 3. Manning's injury contributed, but the Vols would have lost to the strength of Nebraska anyway. Michigan won and AP placed them 1 and Nebraska 2. The coaches poll placed Nebraska 1 and Michigan 2. On Christmas Day, Tennessee was very much in the hunt, so you're dead wrong as usual.

Tennessee was very much in the hunt in 1956. They were undefeated in the regular season but lost in the Sugar Bowl to Baylor, finishing 10-1. This was in the Bud Wilkinson era at Oklahoma, and the Sooners won the championship with another undefeated season. This too is the year that Johnny Majors was runner-up in the Heisman Trophy race, losing to Paul Hornung who played on a losing-record Notre Dame. A lot of people thought Majors should have won it with the season he had at Tennessee.

In 1956, Tennessee was undefeated and #2 in the country. They were actually #1 in the country, but dropped to #2 in the polls when they only beat #19 Ole Miss by 20 points on in Mid-November and then #2 Oklahoma beat Missouri (3-5-1) by over 50 points (showing that even in the 50s, strength of schedule didn't matter). Of course...nobody but the #1 team was "in the hunt" for the NC on Christmas Day, because they declared the NC before the bowl games were even played...but UT was "in the hunt" more than any other team in the country besides the declared NC Oklahoma.

In 1967, they finished the season 9-1 and #2 in the AP, behind USC, who was also 9-1. Again...the final polls were finished before the bowl games, so nobody was technically "in the hunt" on Christmas Day because the final poll was taken in late November, and the NC was already decided. But, again, UT was closer than any other program in the polls to #1 USC.

In 1997, Tennessee was 3rd in the AP poll going into the bowl game. Had they beaten Nebraska and Washington State beaten Michigan, (meaning the 2 teams above them would have lost) then they would have been named National Champs in the AP Poll...that is still "in the hunt" for the NC.

BigScoreboard, you have misread my post. I added 1956 to 1997 and 1998. So we agree on three times.

I think it is important to point out that with the exception of one year... Both polls declared the National Championship at the end of the regular season until 1968... and the coaches poll did so until 1974... so everything was decided prior to Christmas.

So that Sugar Bowl loss meant nothing. Tennessee just got outvoted by another undefeated regular season team....

Okay, I understand the arrangement of declaring a national champion before the bowl games that was in effect then, but it does not diminish the reality that Tennessee was in the hunt in 1956. They finished second in the polling that year, so it establishes the fact of their being in the hunt.

I agreed with you. I was just updating my post to include your 1956 that I didn't know about. Thanks!

I'm mildly curious as to what this order is based on, only because you numbered it.

It isn't alphabetical.
It isn't most recent (that would be Georgia and Texas)
It isn't most frequent (that would be Alabama)
It isn't geographical

The OCD portion of my brain is trying to decipher the logic of this order

What’s mysterious about it? Billy Ratliff blew Brandon Bulsworth off the line, causing him to step on Stoerner’s foot. Stoerner used the ball to either try and keep his balance or brace his fall. Obviously, that didn’t work out too well for him.
