12 years ago yesterday, Marcus Lattimore was injured against Tennessee

He would never play another snap. In 2013 he was drafted in the 4th round by the 49ers, but retired the next year without ever playing.

“That was the night I realized something had to change,” he said. “Because it just wasn’t fulfilling for me staying in this role as number 21. That probably will be the story of my 30s just trying to figure out what I like outside of athletics.”
Just six months after the university’s hall of fame induction, Lattimore moved to Oregon to do just that. Now he’s running with a new purpose. Lattimore is teaching poetry in Portland, O.R. at a clinic for people recovering from substance abuse.

Just wanted to share because he was my favorite Gamecock player growing up, and probably still is. He's a better person than I could ever dream of being.
I also wanted to give a massive shoutout to the Tennessee team pictured. All class, and nothing but sportsmanship shown.

I was at that game. It really was a special moment to see the overwhelming respect for Lattimore as both teams circled around him. It was definitely not a dirty hit. I lived out near Columbia at the time, and folks that knew him only had good things to say.

Never seen a response like that before or since. The injury was absolutely shocking and Lattimore was one of those players that everyone loved, regardless of the team he played on.
The very fact that he was drafted in the 4th round speaks to how well loved he was. No one takes that risk on an injured RB, it's just not done.

One of our board posters got married that day. We were waiting around before the wedding listening to the game. Didn't know at the time how bad it was. We found out later that afternoon.

Hard to believe it’s already been 12 years since this happened. I was watching this game live and my stomach just dropped when they showed the replay. Lattimore was such a monster and seemed like a really great dude, no doubt he would’ve had an amazing NFL career.
Hats off to Lattimore for finding purpose and happiness away from the field and not letting this turn him into a bitter person like so many others when their careers are cut short with tragedy
the guy who made the hit, #24 Eric Gordon, was the first Tennessee player to approach Lattimore after they got him on the medical cart then everyone else followed. I think Gordon was also the first Tennessee player who started clapping along with the crowd giving Lattimore a standing ovation. IIRC, he was pretty distraught about the entire situation after the game and genuinely felt terrible about hurting Lattimore.
Just an unfortunate thing all the way around

Such a sad deal. I hope Marcus Lattimore is killing it in life. And that doesn’t mean just making a ton of money. You never know why people are put in certain situations.

I too remember watching this game and oh my!
From everything I've read and/or heard since this happened, this young man made the most of such a horrible situation. It's easy for us fans to forget throughout the emotions of a season that these dudes put their body on the line day in and day out, not only doing what they love, but also entertaining rabid fans and spectators. Wish the dude could have benefited from NIL.

Despite that awful injury it sounds like he has found his calling perhaps. As Montgomery Gentry said, thats

Lattimore is a top class individual and a hell of a football player. Wish he could have lived out his potential. Hope he accomplishes all his goals in coaching.

The day he committed was at his church in Rock Hill. Very early days of live streaming. He torched us in that 2010 game. With the exception of Clowney, he was one of the biggest recruits to ever come out of SC. Those Spurrier teams from 2010-2013 were tough.
