Deboer is probably a really good college coach. Unfortunately College Football is dead

You want him to instill disciple at Alabama, with no longer any binding scholarships, and no contracts?
In the NFL, there are actual contracts and you don't have the ability to just jump teams several times a year. Even those guys have to perform
Most Alabama recruits are gushed over four and five stars prima donnas with long offer lists composed of the best programs. The minute you bench one or put the hammer down, the text messages start flying.and it's just a matter of time.
How do you turn something like that into a football team? There is no way
Can you imagine a legend like Saban being bombarded by half the team for raises and playing time guarantees after a SLOPPY loss in the playoffs?
It must have really been bad for him to just walk away from his life like that
Deboer was dealing with a whole different set of players last year --- College Football players who believed in and cherished the idea of a "team" and who knew they needed to improve to achieve their goals.
It is so bad that we are paying a guy a million dollars a year --- the "GM" --- to deal with all these little assholes so that a coach has the time left to try and put a team together.

I just think we played 2 bad games (well, 1 bad game and 1 game with 3-4 catastrophic errors) and our DC is kind of a dunce. I don't think the last 14 days mean that the sport is dead and the apocalypse is on it's way.
I dunno.
I dunno.

How come all these other teams can play disciplined ball and their players aren't acting out?

I don't see a lot of teams playing very consistently. How about Georgia? Tennessee?
We could easily be 3 - 3 this year.

This season as a whole, on a national basis, is what makes it feel that way to me. The parity, the new clock rules, the expanded playoff, conference expansion, etc. have finally made it feel like we have finished the 10 year or so transition from the regionalized, high school all-star teams version of CFB to the NFL minor league version of CFB. It's been a long time coming, but it still sucks.

It's certainly different. I'm not sure I hate it, but it I don't love it.
The fact that the SEC still somewhat is congruent and regionalized probably has something to do with it. Texas and Oklahoma feel like they at least make some sense, whereas Washington/Rutgers as a B1G conference game just feels like an SNL skit.

Exactly!! The highest paid roster in CFB (Ohio State) just lost to Oregon.

Maybe Byrne needs to contact Jerry Jones for advice on how to manage a roster of pricks.
Jerry is doing a good job with the Cowboys.

At this point we just have irrational toddlers screaming because they cant have cake for breakfast instead of eggs and bacon

I want a guy that gets us to the playoffs consistently and occasionally has a team talented enough to win it all. Jim Harbough’s Michigan being a good example

I just really don't like how they've effectively turned CFB into the NFL with worse players and coaching. What's the point of that? The appeal of the NFL is the product on the field. The appeal of CFB, for me at least, has always been the traditions and the spectacle, but as you pointed out - a Rutgers/Washington B1G Noon kickoff is the opposite of tradition and spectacle. Yes Texas and OU in the SEC makes far more sense than the top 1/3 of the Pac 12 joining the fricking B1G, but I'm not a fan of the super-conference model. I mean you can totally see the SEC and B1G becoming the minor league AFC and NFC in the next few years. It's more a matter of when than if.

There is less loyalty these days. I guess money changed that, but having to recruit a higher number of players nationally to compete at the highest level may have something to do with it. It blew my mind when Alabama started signing players from Texas and even more when California entered the picture. College football will resemble basketball in the future. Alabama making the Final Four really surprised me. The usual suspects will probably still win the championship. Could be a dark horse here or there.

Which teams are you talking about? There has been inconsistency all over college football this year. The only teams playing disciplined are the Vanderbilts of the world.

But those guys are under contract and at least follow conditions agreed upon.
Soft college players get mad and hit the portal.

It ain’t dead but it ain’t going back to what it was regardless of message board talk from fans.

And there are going to have to be contracts in the future. No way will these schools and alumni continue to pump massive resources into these programs and allow these players to remain total free agents..

I think we have for years allowed players to run their mouths after every single play. Vandy was the worst game that I've watched concerning that, but I do think that our guys were much better on Saturday about just playing football without having to talk shite after every play.

Are there any players at any level that want to win MORE than they want to be paid?
You used to have to win in college to get paid at the next level. And if you weren't on a winning team, you at least had to stand out.

Not saying I disagree wholeheartedly but other teams seem to be managing without the discipline and penalty issues
