I did not play football so I’m clueless on my question: How difficult is it to completely change the defensive scheme (5-2-4) back to something that actually works mid season?

It can work if we tackle properly.

This roster was recruited for a 3-4. It probably wouldn’t be hard if this was preseason, but at the same time we’ve had guys change weights and the sort in the front seven.

Plus the freshman DB’s have only ever seen this playbook. So while some base concepts are still the same we would have them learning new scenarios for the front seven that changes responsibilities

It should be fine regardless if we just weren’t so predictable with our play calling

It would be nearly impossible. It takes weeks to change. No time.

I did not play either, but I don’t think it’s the scheme, any scheme can work in multiple situations, but you have to be able to make adjustments, and I don’t see adjustments happening on either side of the ball.

DeBoer is going to let his buddies get him run out of town.

It’s a 4-2-5 and it’s not the formation that’s the issue, although we should have at least tried some base 3-4 or 4-3 against Vandy.

A ton of teams are running 4-2-5 or similar schemes right now, we just aren’t executing and don’t have game wreckers on the DL to protect our young secondary. Which is why we should blitz more, but that’s not Wommack’s MO.

It’s a lot of things all adding up to the shitshow we’re seeing.

We don't have the LBs...

Watch Oklahoma and see how their LBs don't wait, they anticipate and make negative plays.

Our LBs aren't making those even when we blitz because they whiff on the tackle

It's impossible. The scheme isn't the issue. We have basically gone to Saban's nickel configuration as our base defense, which it already had been for years for all intents and purposes. Wommack just does insane shite like dropping into a zone and rushing 3 on 3rd and 10, which is essentially conceding.

One thing that would immediately improve the defense is to tell them to stop trying to strip the fricking ball on every tackle. Tackling with one arm while punching at the ball with the other is turning 2-3 yard gains into 6-7 yard gains. Just wrap up and take them to the damn ground.

I’m hard pressed that these guys are the issue when they were crashing the LOS last year. I guarantee you the playcall is for them to sit and react and not plug the gaps

Missed tackles are a legitimate issue

The problem is the 3-3-5 with zero blitz or only rushing the 3. Especially vs a running team you need more down lineman.

This is what's so frustrating. I've never seen so many missed tackles or tackles where our defenders get dragged for an additional 5 yards.

We should be bringing 5 every other play at minimum. This three man rush on down and distance shite drives me up the wall.

Some of our LBs and DBs are atrocious at shedding blocks and therefore never have an opportunity to make a tackle.

This is the reason the defense looks the way it does.
Wommack isn't going 3-4. He just isn't. So, if BAMA isn't going to give him time to recruit guys for his scheme, there's no reason to keep him. DeBoer knows what he's doing. It isn't easy to just switch schemes. It's much easier to switch players, but you have to get guys that can play your scheme first.

He really doesn't have all the pieces to run his offense either.

Milroe is NOT Penix. Penix is a drop back passer that is mobile.
Milroe is a running back that can throw the deep ball.

I really hope DeBoer is given time to get the pieces in place, but it seems like he didn’t need to do that at Washington.

He brought the qb with him.

He had guys in place to run that defense in Washington. Washington had a bunch of transfers on that defense, too.

I just hope DeBoer is man enough to tell the media and fans to get fricked and as long as he's the coach he's going to run the program like he sees fit. Maybe not in those words.
Wommack is trying to run his defense with guys recruited to play 3-4. He has to get guys. But it's hard to not sound like a shithead to the guys in the locker room if you are telling the media you need to get guys to play your scheme.

Look at it like this. If you run anything other than a blitz, you have three guys to stop the run or clog rush lane. Typically those three guys are being blocked by 5: basic math says that isn’t going to bode well against the run. In that situation, our backers and safety’s are reacting instead of attacking. When you react you’re already on the back foot, which is why we stop a guy three yards short of a touchdown, and he carries us into the end zone.
