What do you want to see against WKU?

For me it’s the ability to dominate the trenches. I just think we have been too finicky in this department the last few years. I want our OL to show that they are better than the opposing DL and vice versa.
I’d also love to see Milroe making the easy throws consistently.

Physically dominate them, rush for 250 or more yards, generate at least 3 turnovers and 5 sacks on defense.

Preparedness.
No procedural penalties, no guys frantically trying to get lined up, no communication errors. With the helmet comms now it should go a long way towards reducing this, but I just want us to like we've prepared hard in the fundamentals first and foremost. Doing the little things right.
After the ball is snapped- hopefully we can see signs of improvement in Milroe as a processor. Take what the defense is giving and get the ball to your skill guys early in space. Would like to see the average time to throw revert back to the middle of the pack and not dead last in the country.
Lastly I want to see us get out of there with our health in tact.
Almost forgot- 150 receiving and two touchdowns from Ryan Williams

Consistent snaps, minimal penalties, no injuries, just more rhythm in general on offense, and hopefully someone emerges as a passrusher.

I think we will see a better team effort of sacks all around. With the new 1 gap system we will be pressuring more instead of our DL just holding the line against runs.
That system used to work great but it’s a passing league now just like the NFL.

Yeah, I'd love to see a stronger showing from our linemen on both sides.
What I'd like most is to see some signs of improvement from Milroe on the knowing where and when to go with the ball side of things. I'm sure he's improved in general and I'm sure this staff will have a much better system worked out for him, bur this will be a much funner year if his decision making has improved even marginally.
Don't know what to expect from them, but looking forward to seeing our guys in the secondary in action.

Dominate up front.
Hit some explosive plays.
Defense communicate well and be in position.
Guys on the defensive line establish themselves.
No bad snaps.
No stupid penalties.
No one gets injured.

Milroe operating within the confines of the new offense working with the helmet microphone. Can he adjust protection with the extra year, better coaching and reps? I genuinely don’t think we run the full version of the Penix (Grubb) offense from UW, but I suspect we won’t see the real offense until we visit Camp Randall.
RT situation on the OL.
CB communication and coverage busts.
Edge pass rush.

I agree, but I think we all also need to expect to allow more explosive run plays than we did with the Saban defense. It’s always pros and cons.

I'm more interested in what the defense does than offense. I feel confident that the offense will look like last year's did later in the season, just more competent.
The defense is going to look a lot different. Going from a 2 gap scheme to a 1 gap scheme will be a big change. Playing zone in the secondary will also look different. I think it's going to be a positive change. Secondary guys will be able to be plugged in a lot easier than under Saban's more complicated system.

Jimmy Stein was on a podcast talking about this and I agree with him that it’s going to likely help us against AU and UT due to what they do schematically and probably hurt us a bit against UGA due to their more pro style offense.
I suspect that had he stayed another couple years Saban might’ve even evolved a bit given what Heupel and Freeze have shown they can do with lesser personnel against certain looks compared to how Kirby has dealt with them at UGA.

Abandoning the pattern match approach I’d argue should make the system easier to learn and minimize busts, but probably lowers the ceiling of what we can achieve with experienced coverage guys down the road. I also think that with the helmet mics it might’ve been a bit easier to call some of the adjustments, but I agree we are in much better shape without it for this year due to all the new faces.

I agree with this. I wasn't very impressed with Washington's defense/scheme but not sure if that is on the DC where DeBoer is more hands-off or if that is the scheme the coach prefers. I don't want to see teams like UGA run for 200 + yards like Michigan did in the title game.

Mid to late season championship-worthy form.
But seriously, I want to see good communication on both sides of the ball. Clean execution. No stupid flags. Use timeouts when they are needed. Offensive linemen owning the trenches would be gold. Zero injuries.

One thing I noticed about Washington's D last year is that they played with a lot of effort, and were disciplined. I think talent was the problem.

A win.
I don't mean this as a put down, we just need to get off on the right foot without any catastrophic meltdowns.
For us to expect a well oiled machine in the very first game under a new coach is moderately unrealistic.
Just a fairly solid game is what I want to see.

Kane Wommack wasn't running Washington's defense.
Wommack was the DC with DeBoer at Indiana in 2019-2020. In 2018 Indiana gave up 29.9ppg and in 2021 they gave up 33,3 ppg. For the 2 years Wommack was there they gave up 24.4 and 20.3 ppg.
So the best two years Indiana has had defensively in the past decade were under Wommack.

yeah, it was a general thought in reply to him talking about Washington's 2023 defense.
