Didn’t realize UCLA was so successful against the SEC.

Seeing a shot at redemption this year with the Bruins on our schedule. It naturally reminded me of the disastrous opener for the Tigers in 2021. Then it made me remember when they knocked off Tennessee and Bama. I did some digging back to the ‘92 expansion.

2021: W v LSU 38-27
2017: W v TAMU 45-44
2016: L @ TAMU 24-31 (OT)
2009: W @ Tenn 19-15
2008: W v Tenn 27-24 (OT)
2001: W @ Bama 20-17
2000: W v Bama 35-24
1997: L v Tenn 24-30
1996: L @ Tenn 20-35
1992: W v Tenn 25-23

7-3 isn’t too shabby. The comeback over aTm in 2017 also gave us the great Aggy pimp cane walk on the sidelines.

Here’s how they have fared against our SEC newcomers in that time:

2019: L v OU 14-48
2018: L @ OU 21-49
2014: W v Tex 20-17
2011: L v Tex 20-49
2010: W @ Tex 34-12
2005: W v OU 41-24
2003: L @ OU 24-59
1998: W v Tex 49-31
1997: W @ Tex 66-3
1997: W v TAMU 29-23 (Cotton Bowl)

They seem to own Texas. Fun fact, between the ‘97 Texas win and the first two quarters of the ‘98 Texas game, the Bruins outscored the Longhorns 101-6.

What a time that was to be alive

Was that the time the Kenny whatever guy became a Heisman contender in the first half? Then busted out so bad I don’t even remember his name.

Rout 66. A day that lives in infamy in Austin

Losing to them in Jerry World in 2014 was the first sign that Charlie Strong was in way over his head. Texas recovered a fumble up 3 with less than 3 minutes to go and still somehow lost.

Texas also kicked off both halves due to a massive faux pas on the coin toss

I remmeber being in Sanford for the season opener against Ga sotuhern in 2000. There were whispers around the stadium (obviously pre cell-phone) that UCLA was beating bama pretty solidly and it was hard to believe. Bama had a hell of a 1999 and started 2000 ranked #3. They appeared poised for a massive year and I think freddie milons retruend a punt for a TD extremely early in the game. Then they got whipped the rest of the way. Very strange.

UCLA can be surprisingly tough when you don't expect them to be. You never see them atop the recruiting rankings but they always seem to have a few dudes on their team and they can make you sweat. And they don't quit...

Held UCLA to a 3 and out and then Freddie did a Freddie and zig zagged around before finding a seam and going to the house. Then things pretty quickly fell apart. It became obvious that only the generational leadership of Shaun and Chris Samuel the year before kept that thing together. When they left and it was back in the hands of DuBose and DuBose alone, things imploded.

Hilariously that team went 3-8 with all 3 wins in the SEC, including vs 8-4 South Carolina and 7-5 Ole Miss.

Wrong. Pimp stick was at Kyle Field when we beat them. but not doubt that's what led to our demise a year later. Thank you, Mr. Sumlin.

The SEC wasn’t as elite before 2006

UCLA historically has a solid history, especially before 2000, but these aren’t super impressive SEC teams they were beating. Tennessee in the 1990s is probably the best team listed

My god Texas has taken some arse frickings, didn’t OU also gape them 63-14 twice in 3 years or something like that?

Umm yes it was. Just didn’t get the credit it deserved yet.

We’re on the opposite end of it now. Now we have the reputation of being elite and we’re not.

Reputation is always lagging actual.

UCLA has a losing record vs. Georgia.........

-- Bruins lost, 9-0, to the Dawgs in the 1943 Rose Bowl Game

-- Bruins lost, 19-8, to the Dawgs in 1983 season opener in Athens (I was at this game)

Lordy, SEC....UCLA's just a b-e-a-r!

OU beat Texas 63-14 in 2000, 65-13 in 2003, 55-17 in 2011, and 63-21 in 2012.

Texas was ranked in the top 15 every time.

Southern California in general was a truly rich recruiting ground before the politicians ruined it.

Now basically the south and midwest are the hot beds for college athletics.

You younguns don’t remember it and I’m sure don’t care but there was a time when UCLA was a force. Tommy prothro finished top 5 a couple times as well as Dick Vermiel but Terry Donahue took that program to the number one spot in the polls at least 3 times and were a fixture in the top 10. Players such as freeman McNeil, Randy cross, Troy Aikman, JJ Stokes, Carnell Lake, Ken Norton jr, Cade Mcnown, Heisman Trophy winner Gary Bieben, Jonathan Ogden, Kenyon Coleman just to name very few came through there. 41 consensus all Americans, 17 former UCLA players are in the college football hall of fame. They have won the PAC 17 times.
They haven’t been much in a long time but there was a time when you played the Bruins you had your hands full.

UCLA's never been a "force" in football.

They had three good seasons in the mid-1950s and weren't consisently good until Terry Donahue became their coach. From 1983-'88, they posted some good seasons, winning at least 10 games three times.

Since 1988, they've won 10 games in a season only 5 times, never winning more than that. In fact, UCLA has NEVER won more than 10 games in a season IN THEIR HISTORY.

UCLA was the 1954 FWAA national champion. The Bruins have had some good single seasons, but UCLA's NEVER been a "force" in football.
