I have a had time believing that CPM would come out of retirement. I have a lot of respect for USC baseball, but he basically gave up on recruiting his last 3 or 4 years (he admitted as much after his Dad died.)

He's seen his better days. Move on to someone else.

Monte Lee is the other candidate

Just checked 247.

can confirm that this mystery candidate that South Carolina has been talking to is former LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. I first heard his name early this afternoon, but hadn’t been able to confirm with someone I trust until now. I’ve now been able to confirm it.
I have not confirmed that he is absolutely the hire at this time. But signs certainly point to that.
-- South Carolina has scheduled a Board of Trustees meeting for 4 p.m. on Tuesday for approval of Athletics Employment Contracts.

Okay sounds good, the baseVOLS will happily retire Mainieri once again if needed

Oh no - would be a terrible hire

I just can't see this happening. Would be a bad hire.

It’s Ray Tanner making the hire. So it possible

damn. South Carolina is really committed to not returning to glory.

He really stopped recruiting at LSU and I cannot see him doing very well in the portal/NIL era. I feel like this is a bad move by USCe, but we'll see. I wish Paul the best.

I just don't see it. Mainieri was, by his own admission, burnt out of coaching at a high profile program when he retired. He pulled his name out of both the Notre Dame and Miami jobs in the last 2 years. He and his wife just built a house a couple of doors down from his daughter. I find it hard to believe South Carolina would actually consider him or that he'd actually get his wife's approval to un-retire and enter another meatgrinder 700+ miles away from his grandchildren at his age. He certainly doesn't need the money either.

I have a hard time thinking PM is serious about coaching again. He’s older and hasn't gone through the transition that came with the NIL. I think it would be a mistake.

someone said Kendall Rogers mentioned Maineri is doing a favor for Ray Tanner so he can pretend he knocked on a bunch of doors but landed on Monte Lee. That makes way more sense than hiring a 66-year-old.

I don't disagree. That is really the only way this makes sense for South Carolina

Shoulda fired Tanner first.

SC has previously failed with continuation coaches (Chad Holbrook) and mid conference level coaches (Mark Kingston). Mainieri is at least a proven commodity in SEC baseball. None of the other candidates fit that criterion.
People also fail to remember that Steve Spurrier was 60 when South Carolina hired him. Lou Holtz was also in his 60s. I'll take a proven winner.
