Need to add 2001 Tennessee. After losing to LSU in the SEC Championship, #2 Tenn lost their Rose Bowl bid.

In other words the State of Alabama can eat a dick. I don’t know if we win it in 2010 or 2012. However, I am pretty fricking confident we win it in 2006.

2017 - SEC Championship (Uga)

Yeah, need to add this one along with our 1988 loss to LSU in the "earthquake game" to the list. We are playing Notre Dame for the championship if we beat LSU that year instead of letting them come back at the last minute.

In 2006 we would have a had a chance at a title if we hadn't lost to Arkansas (would have had to beat Florida for a second time in the SEC championship).

Pitt had already been named national champs. Up through 1964, the national champs were awarded prior to the bowl games.

How do you not list 1988 LSU? That 4th down play singlehandedly kept AU out of the Sugar Bowl against #1 Notre Dame.

‘88 LSU was costly. But again, even if we had gotten a shot at Notre Dame that doesn’t mean we would have won that game.

2006 Arkansas loss = 2006 Georgia loss. Either of these would have given us another shot at beating Florida again.

But there is certainly no guarantee we would have defeated Florida a second time or a guarantee we could have beaten Ohio State.

Again, this is not a question about what games cost a team a CHANCE at getting to play for a title…. It’s about games that had your team won you’d undoubtedly won the Championship.

By nature, all games since 1998 that cost a team a national title had to be National Title Games. But prior to ‘98, there are numerous regular season games that could have changed the outcome of the National Championship.

I didn’t realize playing Notre Dame equals winning a National Championship. Explain how that works for me.

No one regards Cal 1937 champs.

Dunkel and Helms didn’t even exist in 1937 for that matter.

There are a few that standout but none would have meant a national title game at least

1998 - We had one close season opening loss to #2 Florida State and were undefeated until we puked one up against Ricky William and Texas at the last second.

We still beat #2 K State in the Big 12 title game, which could of/should of vaulted us into the title game over a decent but not great Va Tech team.

2012 - We were rolling like I have never seen before by the end of the year and had knocked off #1 Bama in their place. We then dropped the LSU game which killed any hopes.

Not sure we could have beat that excellent Georgia squad in the SEC title game but we would have rolled Notre Dame in the title game.

Yes. Which is why it’s listed as a loss that cost Auburn a national title.

That was our third loss of the season. It definitely did not cost Alabama a national title. It didn’t even cost us an SEC title chance.
