France lost between 1.4 and 1.8 million soldiers during WWI. That is dead or missing and doesn’t count the wounded. That was an additional 4 million men. France lost almost 5% of their population in World War One.

To put that into comparison, that would be like the United States today losing 10 million military personnel and 5 million civilians dead and 40 million wounded. I promise if that happened here today, it would change this country forever:

But you don’t think that France losing so many men in World War One impacted how they reacted in World War Two? If you think it is the stupidest thing you’ve ever seen than you must not.

and Great Britain lost 6% of their adult men. Do you not think it affected their actions in WWII? Why do you think Chamberlain was so wanting to avoid another war in Europe? Why do you think the US was so set on not getting involved in WWII? France, like Great Britain, declared war on Germany after Germany invaded Poland. Hardly the actions of a nation not willing to fight. And AGAIN, it wasnt just French forces that retreated in France it was also the entire BEF and were only able to be rescued because Hitler did not attack Dunkirk.

>I stand by my original comment. I think that World War One emasculated a whole generation of French males and dictated their views on fighting and how they rebuilt their country after World War One. And we saw proof of that in World War Two.
I can tell you have French ancestry.

You have some stupid misconception that you got from jokes about the French. They fought beyond bravely in WWII. They were completely caught off guard by Germany and did not even think they would attack through the Ardennes. France believed the Maginot Line would stop any direct attack from the West and force any battle with Germany into the Low Countries

>This last comment is dumb as hell. You know what America did after the Philipines fell? They went back and beat the shite out of Japan and rescued the prisoners that were still alive. Japan has not ever dared frick with America since then. The French? They got bulldozed by Germany twice in the span of 25 years.

and do you know what the surviving French military did after France fell? They went back and beat the shite out of the Germans and rescued the POWs still alive. Again the French fought in ever theater in WWII.

>They got bulldozed by Germany twice in the span of 25 years.

OK so you confirmed that you do not know history. Germany only got about 100 miles into French territory at their furthest in WWI, they didnt "bulldoze" France.

A lot of this is French dogging is because culturally, the French don't do things in a masculine way. At least enough to satisfy guys who try and bask in their masculinity.

I mean we are talking about the softest of the "Romance" languages when we are talking French. We are talking pastries, and croissants and other soft sissy food. French drink wine instead of beer. Kiss each other on the cheek and are big on "the arts".

Whether or not that has anything to do with bravery in war time I do not know. But it gives American "tough guys" somebody to mock.

I must remind you ranters that the the fastest white guy in the world is from France.

And that is even without any Germans chasing him.

Actually, they didn't. The Maginot Line was a propaganda boondoggle, it was never completed because the cost was so high. No military man thought it would protect France against a determined attack. It was hoped that it would comfort the citizenry.

France was largely agrarian in the early 20th century, and had a fraction of the population, industrial capacity and GDP of Germany. There were 42 million in France in 1939, as opposed to 69 million in Germany.

The French are such pussies they have to have someone else slice up their green beans for them because a whole green bean would whip their arse.

No we hate the French b/c of 2 world wars, playing a role of pulling the U.S. into Vietnam, backing out of NATO because they knew we’d take care of them, then selling weapons to our adversaries… many of which were used against the Brits in the Falklands war. They’re assholes as a standard. I can say this with absolute certainty having worked with French citizens.

You really don’t know France if you think that. Paris does have a large population of immigrants, but so does LA, NYC, Miami. The Loire Valley is amazing. Brittany and Normandy are beautiful , the former largely unknown to Americans. France has an amazingly diverse geography that can entirely change in a few miles. There are many places in France with amazing history, art, architecture, food, most Americans know little about. Where in America can you stand in a 1200 year old church in a tiny village in Brittany with 1000 year old frescoes, or walk through the castle where Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, or John Lackland, and Eleanor of Aquitaine lived?

I don’t know. You tell me. I just know if it weren’t for England and the United States they would be speaking German right now.

Why have they become so prone to throwing down their weapons and surrendering? It is nature or nuture?

Well, for one, England's saving grace in WWII, as in many other conflicts, was the English Channel. Take that away and they would have fallen, too.

It's been well-documented why the French surrendered so quickly in WWII, if you really care to read up about it.

Also important to note: without the French, we would not have won our independence from England. So the gratitude between France and America should go both ways without question.

During the Revolution, America begged France for help. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin sailed there and requested assistance for over a year. The French aristocracy just made fun of the American hicks. However, when it looked like America might actually defeat the British, and the British were France’s mortal enemy, France sent some of their navy to America. They told America they had three months and then they were heading home because of winter weather. The French provided a naval blockade during this time. They participated in one battle, providing naval cannon fire during one battle, an American victory.

Yes, the French waited until 1778 to jump in, but do you blame them? A rag tag group of militias rebranding as a Continental Army with not much if any naval support, going against the major world and naval powers at the time, also France’s next door neighbor with whom relations were already tenuous…

But the French provided more than what you outlined when they did get involved: immense amounts of gold and credit, top ranked generals and military advisors, munitions and personnel, supplies transport, the naval blockade, direct support to Washington. France also convinced its native American allies to join and disrupt British resupply operations, etc.

Discredit them as you may, but we don’t win without French support. And yes, the French were America’s first true ally starting in 1778. This acknowledgment by France gave America a significant amount of legitimacy on the world stage.

We did not have formal diplomatic relations with Britain until 1785.

Jumping in on this one:

The whole reason Cinco De Mayo is a holiday!!!

The French not holding their own led to the whole 5hitshow in Vietnam.

There actually are websites dedicated to listing French surrenders...but these two illustrate the point.
