The feeling of being in the tournament in march is so fun and miserable. The dread of knowing the season can either be over is what makes it so fun

These stats are not meaningless but they are meaningless in reality. Back in the day (70s and before) you could have a great team and not even make the NCAA tournament. Only one team from a conference could get in at times.
This is the story for SC. We were the best team in the country in 69. Lost our Acc player of the year to injury in the tournament. still almost won, but because we didnt we didnt make the tournament. The ACC was brutal back then. We had several good years where the conference absolutely fricked us over with stupid rules they put in place. The ACC was corrupt as hell

Yea back in the day was hard to make the tournament. Hell, even the governor of Mississippi tried to stop our best team ever from playing because the other team had a black guy.
Our coach and team snuck out of the state in the middle of the night to go play. Pretty cool story actually - LINK

This is surprising.
I thought Mizzou had a really good basketball history.
Tell me about it. Hall of Fame coach Norm Stewart just couldn't find success in the tourney. Over his 32 years as MU coach he posted a respectable 634-333 record providing plenty of entertaining regular-season basketball which is likely why people felt MU had a decent BB program. Come tourney time though (the standard by which BB teams are judged) his teams were AWOL.
Still, he was a crotchety old-school hard-arse coach, and I very much enjoyed the Stewart era. I'm sure you don't give two shits about Norm or MU basketball in general, but ESPN did an interesting documentary about his career in 2016 titled, appropriately enough, "Norm"

Very proud of our old Southwest Conference brothers on All-Time men's basketball report card
The Tournament has evolved so much over the years. At one point it was just 16 teams and usually only one team from a conference got a bid.
The SEC was penalized for Kentucky being such a powerhouse which resulted in basically anyone else not ever getting to play in the Tournament.
The SWC benefited from parity and no one dominant program.
If you look at these rankings since 1986 (I believe that’s when it expanded) a lot of those old SWC teams don’t have near the accomplishments and virtually 90% of the SEC’s tournament bids aside from Kentucky have been since then.
