When DeBoer went there. All he did was get to work with the players he had, bright in some guys from the portal, and won 11 games with a team that win 4 games the year before.

Trust me, I am all for giving him a chance to prove himself. I think most anyone we brought in would have seen a lot of guys leave. However, losing 20 players from a 4 win team is not really comparable to losing 20 here.

He lost 20 (I thought 28) from a 4 win team and in his second season they were in the natty. The players staying behind here are still elite. I would say he’s in better position here.

My point is losing 20 off a 4 win team is addition by subtraction. We on the other hand are losing starters off of a playoff team. I don't see us being better with these subtractions.
As I said, I don't think anyone else would have kept a lot of these either so hopefully he can keep it rolling with what we retain and add in the right pieces.

I’m pumped for the future and can’t wait to see what coach and the players can do.
Doesn’t change the fact that Alabama had no plan to keep as many core guys as possible.
We will see teams learn from this and have much better methods of preserving their rosters in these new times.
It did not have to be this way for us.
ETA: But I absolutely hear you OP

How? Outside of outbidding all the teams vulturing our players I don't see what could have been done differently. Hopefully this is a wake up call to our boosters/REC that the Saban discount days are over and they need to wake the frick up.

This happens everywhere.

In the end I would rather have a new staff to start this over with even if it means losing starters, instead of retaining former staff members that are part of the past. To many times I have seen programs try to hold onto the past with coaches hoping for an easy transition and rarely does it ever work out.
We just had the greatest coach of all time retire. It is not going to be an easy transition no matter who you hire, kept, or how many bags of money you throw at recruits/players. In the end we have to hope he can keep it rolling and understand the season we just had is more likely the norm in regard to closer games than days where UA dominated its opponents.

Preach. There was someone posting here yesterday about we should have a “Saban tree” of coaches. We had too much trouble with such things post Coach Bryant, may he RIP. We don’t need to go there again. What’s past was stupendous, but what’s past is past.

They had no money stashed away to keep players, is that what you're saying? That is the only thing that would have kept the players that we lost. That is the only damage control that could have been done. Literally. It's all about money. These players are cashing in on a small window when people are still trying to figure out the best way forward with the NIL.
Regardless, all of this will be moot in a few years when the NIL is regulated and the rules are changed significantly.

What is the evidence that there was no plan? Just because many guys went after money, or left because Saban was gone, doesn't mean there was no plan.

There isn't going to be any rules to prevent college players from making bank on dollars.
Check the makeup of your favorite team roster.

It's not about preventing players from making money, at all. That's not what I'm saying. On the contrary, I'm happy players are profiting from a game that they put their bodies on the line for, and that is a money making machine.
What I'm saying is currently this is the "wild west" era of the NIL. Things will not look like they do currently in 2028 or 2029, or sooner. (imo)

About to see it with Michigan and Sherrone Moore. We’ll see how that works out. If a program thinks they have the future on staff and can keep together their roster, great, but that wasn’t the case with Alabama. I think anybody with a brain would rather have a coach for the long time future than worrying about a few players

Not to mention, a big part of his tree hasn’t exactly torn it up as head coaches

There is no appreciable regulation of this that will survive a court challenge.
You’re like most fans, you’re looking at this from a competitive sports perspective and standpoint, and think it will be reined in by people who see that as a priority.
That is utterly irrelevant, however, when you have players going to court and successfully arguing that keeping them from changing “jobs” when they want to or making as much money off their efforts as they want to in what has become a multibillion dollar business more than a competitive sport is a federal restraint of trade violation.
And I will remind you that the last Supreme Court decision on this was 9-0, liberals and conservatives on the same side.
The sad and harsh reality is what fans want is not going to be given any consideration whatsoever in this, and this genie is not going back into the bottle, ever.
It will eventually stabilize and work itself out for the schools, and fans can choose whether to continue watching or not. But the old days and the old sport are gone forever.

Precisely. You deal with the landscape as it is. Not how you think it should be.
