Saban Retirement Rumor

Listening to Full Ride on Sirius (College Sports Radio).
Rick Neuheisel just dropped a bombshell rumor. He said that word going around is that a day or two after the Bowl Game that a number of players went to Saban and said they wanted their "deals" looked at/renegotiated. He further stated that this is probably one of the things he took into consideration in going ahead and leaving Tuscaloosa.
This is why NIL is going to kill CFB.
Remember, this is rumor so don't kill the messenger. I don't know if this is true or not, but I do think that NIL definitely had an impact on Coach Saban's decision.

He couldn't adapt?

NIL is going to kill the schools like Bama and Saban who paid them under the table for years, and reward the kids and fans that pony up the most money and give the kids the best environment for school and sports.

It's already killed it in my mind.
I'm so glad LSU won the last great National Championship in 2019.

This is factual. Bond was one of the first.

Makes sense-- and that's not a knock on the Tide players. I'm sure Saban just decided this wasn't what he signed up for in 1973. Don't blame him one bit.
He hinted about 4 years ago this was going to happen. And if something doesn't change it will bite every top 30 program in the backyard.

This is why players negotiating their own deals ( won’t work) verses collective bargaining. Set the pay, contracts are signed either 1,2,or 3 year increments so players can’t up and transfer every year, and if players must prove how their NIL is actually being used. Example can’t sign a deal with dealership X and not do what the contract says…. Commercials, appearances etc….

I don’t blame him. Who would want to deal with these teenage primadonnas? You young bucks don’t have a frame of reference for how much the game of college football has been degraded.

I wouldn't doubt it one bit. And I'm certain Saban was not the only CFB coach to have that conversation after the last game of the season.
If so, I even more support Saban's decision to retire.

This whole NIL thing is going to reward the deep pocket schools and kill the rest.
A few years ago, I saw a list of schools that were actually turning a profit or operating in the black.
Out of 128(?) D-1 schools, only 6 or 8 were turning a profit. And before anyone says that can't be right, remember, that CFB is the cash cow for the ENTIRE athletic department. IE: Women's Tennis, Equestrian, etc...
So, what that means is that to make up the shortfall and to compete in the current NIL climate, the institutions have to have another revenue source. IE: Boosters/Alumni/Collectives/etc.
And that also means that the schools with the deepest pockets will be able to buy the best players and, in essence, buy National Championships

I heard he might retire.
I'll bet if he retires, the Bammers will be in full meltdown.

It already did. You’ve been watching and cheering for a semi-pro team played by 1099 contractors the last 2 years.

Whether that's true or not, I do believe a control freak like Saban would despise NIL.
How do you coach players making 6 figures and up just to wear your uniform with no contract laying out expectations? Every year, you're having to beg boosters for more money just to keep the likes of a three star depth piece sitting on the bench next year. You're dealing with locker room issues because one player has more cash than another. It's chaos and while I think Saban has long benefitted from NIL-like activity, he still had control. Now he has none.
NIL is going to turn college football into bad sports. You can already see it happening.

How many times did I post on here that NIL has killed Saban and most said NOT TRUE
It ended up being Miami Dolphins all over for him

He said “going to kill college football”, what he meant was “kill dynasty’s in college football and make the game far more competitive.”

Good. Saban cheated for years, so this is great stuff. Second, I see NIL money moving to kids that actually produce on the field. It will be more of a Ole Miss model than a Saban model where he paid HS coaches and parents

Partially true. It was talking with Ryan Williams that was the final straw. Dude straight up told him War Eagle and Saban packed it in
Posted on 1/18/24 at 9:08 am to GooseCreekGamecock
are you telling me the players processed saban?

After ole miss makes a run this next season I don’t give a frick anymore.
That Judkins situation is a great example of how you end up hating a player who should’ve been a legend for your school.
