Wouldn't surprise me. He's a football guy, not necessarily a businessman. That might have been why he was unsuccessful in the NFL. X's and O's are his forte, not dealing with the day-to-day and season-to-season minutiae of players' contract management.

Has nothing to do with revenue generating. The schools aren't supposed to be involved. If you have a top women's gymnast and she endorses a product she gets NIL money. Now if you want to have a top gymnastics team, how many women are you going to have to pay to have it?

Remember, this is rumor so don't kill the messenger. I don't know if this is true or not, but I do think that NIL definitely had an impact on Coach Saban's decision.
No one has a more direct link between players and donors in a position to fund a 6 or 7 figure NIL deal than the head coach. There is no reason not to think that all of them are having those kinds of conversations with players. They are not facilitating the deals, they ain't telling the player what to ask for and not telling the donor how much to pay...they are merely the link between the 2. That kind of connection can't be delegated...if I were unless the deal goes exactly the way both parties think it should either or both are going to appeal to the higher authority. I dont know if its true or not but its easy to understand how a multi-millionaire who is 70+ years old and has spent most of his adult life attracting entitled 20 year olds to his team while placating wealthy jock sniffers would say to hell with it, I am out.
As a UGA fan my inclination is to dance in the street and bark at Alabama fans BUT it is not going to be surprising when Kirby Smart reaches the same conclusion in what I fear is the not so distant future. Its bad enough to attract entitled 20 year olds to come play for you. I can't begin to imagine placating wealthy jock sniffers for a living...I wouldn't last 20 minutes. Kirby said a few years ago he thought about quitting because of the grind. He said this year that the system was fatally flawed and needed to be fixed. Those are not the words of a man who is enjoying what he is witnessing first hand. At some point the money is useless to you unless you have some serious issues. Coaching and competing is ALL that keeps them going after a few $10 million seasons, but doing so at a high level today would be akin to asking a heroine addict to rob fort Knox for every fix...they want their drug but the damned work is so distasteful they can learn to live without it. Its going to happen to a bunch of them.

Which means the collectives (hint, a socialist term itself) are demanding that fans who are already tapped out on tickets and various donations to start selling the proverbial girl scout cookies or fundraiser boxes of M&M's just so they can funnel that money to some wide receiver who wants money to go to the strip club every Thursday night.

How many of those Florida State players who skipped out on the bowl game were financially obligated to be there playing, and the media hasn't reported it, or won't report it?

Heard the same thing. No lie, I spoke to a Bama friend of mine who heard from a direct source who spoke to Saban that he met with about 30 players within a couple of days after the Rose Bowl, and every single one asked for more money or more playing time. They said he had already been considering retirement but that was what solidified his decision.

If you watch the NFL doc "A football life" on Saban, you can assume he was never going to fully adapt to the NIL era.
Saban commits himself 100% to everything he does. He expects the same out of his players.
NIL did away with all that. The other side is why can a HC (and staff) be multi millionaires but student athletes can't make $$ of their own name?
I would be in favor of Saban being an advocate to get this reigned in, but maybe he just wants to play golf and hit the lake with Miss Terry.thats fine.

Not trying to be antagonistic but could you cite a source for knowing Saban was looking at retiring in December? Everything I've seen, including his interview on ESPN says it wasn't known until, well, just before it was announced.
No one said (on this thread) that his decision was based on the outcome of the bowl game. What was stated in the original post was that players approached him after the bowl game requesting that their NIL deals be re-evaluated.
