This isn't true for Downs, but I see what you're saying.
Downs earned whatever he gets in NIL on the field. Bond did too. I doubt highly that there was a whole lot of interest last year in any of the guys that went into the portal this season.
If Downs is really going to get $2m, then there's no guarantee he wouldn't have accessed the portal if Saban was still coaching. That's stupid $$$. It would make him TOP 5 in NIL. He made $661k last season. The median salary of an NFL player is $860,000 per year.

The only way this makes any sense is if Downs goes to uga.

Sounds like BS.

Doesn’t matter that’s not what happened. Kiffin was never getting that job and Trob was offered every opportunity to stay and he declined.

That is flat out false. Please read my post from THIS thread below.

Yeah, TRob didn't click with a guy from Dakota, shocker. I guarantee you however TRob and Lane Kiffin probably would make fast friends. So it's not as simple as "we tried to get him." It's who we tried to get him to work for.
The point is kids dont make logical decisions. They like bling, swag, and familiarity. Kiffin and TRob represent that.
However, I've literally posted IN THIS THREAD that it's likely DeBoer could end up being the better coach, but will it be worth the amount of damage in the short term ? It's not like Kiffin is a bad coach so I'm not sure how to figure which would have played out best thus the question put forth the forum.
My post from this exact thread fellas:

It's pretty clear some of them were not comfortable playing for someone they did not know, and decided to go play at places where they had been previously recruited and had relationships in place - and also more money clearly.
I simply think Bama + Kiffin would have caused a real wave of optimism among YOUNG DUMB KIDS.
Every adult in the room likes DeBear more; meanwhile most kids probably like Kiffin and TRob more.
Meanwhile DeBear is clearly the more polished, buttoned down, professional of the two, and he may very well be the long term answer that makes this process worth the upheaval.

No. He was heavily recruited by them, and they were his second school. He has contacts there that he is familiar with, and I guarantee those contacts reached out to him before any of the new staff did.

I am now convinced that moron Huddie Ledbetter was your alt. He used to hammer this exact same type thing into oblivion just like you.

Who is Huddie ?
The thread is hypothetical for the sake of conversation, and all arguments have been well presented.
Dont start calling names and drag the conversation down to rantard land. If you dont like the subject matter then keep on walking, peacefully.

Kirby automatically offered TRob a job while Deboer made TRob actual have to interview instead of being one of his first calls after Byrne hired him.
I don't know TRob personally but anyone including everyone here would take at least a little offence to this... especially when the GOAT made him co-DC and it was heavily rumored Saban was promoting him to being the sole DC.
New guy comes in and doesn't give you the respect you think you deserve then makes you re-interview?

I would not be offended by this at all. T-rob has been around he knows how this game works.

If Saban was going to make T Rob the DC he would have done it before he retired.

I totally disagree. CNS is the ultimate professional. He left the entire thing for DeBoer to handle, and got out of the way.
Kevin Steele all but directly told reporters that TRob was about to be promoted in his Rose Bowl interview. TRob was going to replace Steele if you can read between the lines.
CNS is too much a professional to have done this, but I REALLY wish he would have called DeBoer and said, "hey man, it's your show now, but you gotta reach out to TRob fast because he is critical to keeping the roster intact."
Yall REALLY think it was a coincidence how fast Kirby jumped at the opportunity to get TRob to Athens ? I Kirby is still smiling about that coup.

This might be true. If he wanted TRob retained, but then goes somewhere else, then Andrew Bone or Downs is full of shite.

Agreed 100%. These kids just do not want to play for DeBoer. Why would they? Sure he has a good coaching record, but he got Lucky with Penix. Yes he has more talent this year, but the competition week in and week out is seriously more difficult. Kiffin, Trob, Lanning, Schuman, Dabo would have kept the continuity better for sure. DeBoer is a good coach sure, but it's not about the Xs and Os, like always it's the Jimmy's and Joe's.

His second school was Ohio State

That's who I was talking about, but I see I didn't mention that somehow.
However I caught a locked on episode a little while ago, and theyre saying he may very well follow TRob to uga because he would not have to learn a new defensive system, and he gets to keep his position coach.
But Yes, OSU was his second school, and I bet those guys were i touch with Downs before this new staff was.
Anywhere but UGA is good with me. The idea of having to play against Downs in the SECCG is sickening.

Why wouldn't these kids want to play for a coach that just took his team to the national championship game?
To be fair, that’s an accomplishment but Sonny Dykes did the same thing. Now I think DeBoer is 100x the coach Dykes is but being in the natty isn’t going to wow a kid on its own.
I was team Kiffin and while I do believe that DeBoer is potentially a better long term coach, I don’t think you see this kind of turnover with a known commodity among the SEC. DeBoer is basically starting from scratch.

Kinda where I was too. Wanted Sark (knew it was a long shot ) or Kiffin but didn’t think DeBoer was a possibility really. But , I am kinda happy with the hire . Once he establishes relationships this spring with high school coaches in the region , I think he will be a good coach who will attract top offensive players for sure .

It’s because he’s lazy. It’s basically Mike Price 2.0 except Deboer’s kids aren’t old enough to be given coaching jobs.

They are saying his first call was to Rees to see if he would CoOc or rake the job outright if Grubb don't don't come. Nothing to TRob.
