Bama hasn't had a top 5 scoring defense since 2017

We've been hovering in the mid teens that whole time, good not great. I want to see great defense again.
I hope deboer brings his whole offensive staff, but I'm not sure I want his defensive guys, Washington was 58 and 56 his 2 years there. They were in the 30s the previous 2 seasons, and were perennial top 15, often top 5 while Peterson was there. Might have just been a matter of the defensive talent level tanking after Peterson left, not enough data to know
Fresno State was 20th his second year which was a nice jump from 68th his first year there. That was the highest ranked defense of his 4 fbs coaching seasons

It’s usually a great offense or a great defense. Very rarely is it both. I believe SMU is the only team with a top 20 Offense and Defense this year

Hey, pal, that OP was a well thought out and contributive post to this forum. I actually enjoyed his input. We dont need any one word - smart arse remarks from noobs that have been here for 1 month.
The OP has been contributing here for over a decade, and even though he's being mean to me today YOU should show a little respect to those that have been here a long time, and keep quiet if you dont have something better to add than "ok."

Truth. I've always wondered about that. It has to have something to do with the way they practice.
Maybe the offense whipping the defense all the time carries over to games, and good defensive teams humiliate the offense all week at practice carries over ?
That's all I got

Statistics show a Top 30 defense is what it takes to win a National Championship. Off is usually in top 15. I'd be happy with both those numbers in year 1.

I've got a lot of people angry at me for suggesting this, but not sure why. We all know the best defensive minds are in the South.
A mashup of West coast offense and Good ol Southern defense would seem like a slam dunk recipe for success IMO.

Ok… who you want to run the defense? Other than TRob or Schu.

That and the more physical nature of practices. Defenses practicing against a physical Offense are used to making tough plays.
Also, time of possession. The best defenses almost always are complemented by a physical, ball control offense. Honestly, for Alabama to be in the teens in total defense over the past several years is really good imo. The problem I had with Goldings defenses are ability to get stops when needed. That improved substantially last year.

I agree, I'm kind of tired of the constant attacks out of left field. We are all supposed to be fans of the same team here. If I wanted crap I'd be on the rant.

I don't know how to take overall defensive stats. Maybe SoG can relate then via data but to me there are so many variables. You have a Tua led offense with those weapons... Your defense stats are going to suffer ( but you gut points). You run a ball control offense, and have a viable offense you can limit the opponent to 6 .7 possessions- is your defense great? . You play west coast big 12 ..or do you play Big10 snow
I think this was Lanes problem. You need a 69 TD? Lanes gotbthat. But also 6 3 outs or is 51-50 and 1000 yds of offense. Sark seemed to have a balance but to me McElwain has the most defensive friendly offense. Chain moving clock eating scoring. It gave defense rest, few opportunities for the opponents and made the opponents predictable (benefitting Bama defense). There were studs on Bamas defense ...now doubt but if 2010 era D has an OC of Lane Kiffen, then their stats would have put them much higher ( not necessarily losing games...just worse stats)

JMO but I think it has more to do with personnel and recruiting philosophy. An offensive minded coach throws all his recruiting resources into getting offensive players. He doesn’t look at defensive players every day, isn’t great at evaluating them and doesn’t waste his time and energy on recruiting players he’s not that great at quantifying. The defensive side of the ball including recruiting doesn’t get equal resources or attention to that side of the ball and the defense suffers to a degree.

The last DT we had drafted in the first round was around 2019.

This is it. DLine has been good not great or elite.
For example, Michigan’s last drive to tie the game, first run play gains 6 yards. Stuff that and they are looking at 4&5 a few plays later, or more, instead of 4&2. They might have punted instead of going for it.

Saban is the GOAT but feel like our rivals figured out how to attack his defense, a fresh restart might not be so bad in some areas.

I'm must be mis remembering...or projecting that Clem game where they were able march down the field to win against a tired D...across the whole season.

Oregon, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Mizzou all had Top 20 offenses and defenses. SMU had the 27th rated offense and 35th rated defense. SMU would get manhandled by all of those teams...
YPG is not an accurate measure of defensive and offensive ability.
Washington's D was ranked 36th last year. This was after being ranked 75th in 2022 though. Their D fell off after Peterson left.
