Greatly miss an elite defense. Kirby has done a good job and Mich did it this year. FSU’s defense was very good as well.

As exciting as the high octane offenses are, I still believe defense wins championships.

I agree. Bama's defense this year wasn't elite but was good enough to win a championship. They were just too inconsistent on offense.

Yes I would give pause to bringing anybody on Washingtons staff on the defensive side. Cause to me that's where sark lost the game against Washington. We were gashing them on the ground. Something like almost 8 yards a carry with the second string rb. No telling what Johnathan Brooks would have averaged a carry if he was healthy. But if I was bama I would say yes to the offensive side. But to anybody on defense, nope. Especially dline and linebackers. Now Washingtons secondary was decent. Especially that Muhammad guy. I might think about getting him to come over. But whatever you do bama, you can not lose Caleb downs. Period. He is a staple of your defense. Under no circumstances do you lose him.

Saban is the GOAT but feel like our rivals figured out how to attack his defense, a fresh restart might not be so bad in some areas.

Saban's D often hinged on the linebackers being able to successfully cover and tackle the backs out of the flat because there was so much man to man coverage. That was always a hinge point for the D.

They were in the 30s the previous 2 seasons, and were perennial top 15, often top 5 while Peterson was there. Might have just been a matter of the defensive talent level tanking after Peterson left, not enough data to know

There’s more than enough data to know. Jimmy Lake was the DC while Peterson was there. Saban tried to hire him on a couple occasions over the years but always stayed at UW. He was considered an elite DC and is now an assistant HC with the LA Rams

Peterson ended up retiring and Lake got the HC role at Washington and was there for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He didn’t have much success winning or recruiting; was fired and DeBoer was hired to turn things around.

When Lake was fired a good portion of the defense either left or wasn’t very good to start with. They were fairly well gutted on that side of the ball, and wasn’t a great situation defensively there.

As for what things looks like going forward, I expect that DeBoer will try to fill out the defensive roles with long time SEC guys. We’re kind of seeing that already.

you cant really go by that, if I am lets say Nevada and I run the ball a lot and take time off the clock, my defense will see the field a lot less and I will not give up as many points. Look at the whole Big 10, they all play that style, so lets say Wisc. loses to Penn. St 17-10, does that meat ot was great defense?

You have to go by yards PER PLAY now days, with teams like Bama in 2020 and LSU in 2019 scoring so fast and so much, the defense, 24 points ahead, will be more tired ad give up a few more points. But its all relative.

If Mich. and Iowa each get off 50 plays and Bama vs. LSU each get off 75 its not the SAME THING. We must look at yards per play now-a-days.

It’s usually a great offense or a great defense. Very rarely is it both. I believe SMU is the only team with a top 20 Offense and Defense this year

Michigan had the #1 scoring defense and #14 scoring offense.

I was looking at total defense when I posted that. Didn’t realize he said “scoring defense” until just now.
