Saban wants control of the football program still.

Nick Saban wants to continue to have a voice at Alabama and he's gonna have an office at Bryant-Denny Stadium..
He's still gonna be involved and he's really interested in broadcasting" ~
@ReceDavis
Now I see why Dan Lanning turned them down. What coach is going to want to come in and still be in the shadows of Saban and have to answer to him basically when it comes to football. A HC wants full control of his team, not partial control with oversight from Saban.
Could Alabama seriously be letting Saban do, what Fulmer did to UT. “Retire”, but still have a voice in football and heavy influence on the program till he was made AD. Then Fulmer just wrecked UT as an AD till he was forced out again.
Saban really told a player what? “That he could get on there arse, just as easy from his office at Bryant Denny, than he can now”. Does that sound like a coach that is releasing control and fully “retiring”? It’s obvious why they haven’t named a big time coach yet!
Saban still wants a “voice” over Bama football

He is too much of a control freak for that. If it wasn’t for NIL, and the Portal, he would still be coaching. He got out of coaching because he didn’t want to deal with not being able to keep the Competive advantages he once had over teams. Now NIL and the portal has spread the talent around more and he has to work harder to get kids now and win games. Before, he paid players under the table to stack 5*’s on the bench for 3 years before they play. Now kids are not waiting 3-4 years to play anymore and he no longer has the advantage of paying players as NIL has even that out.

Not good for Alabama, great for the rest of us

The imp is going to ruin what he built!

This is all I needed to hear to explain why Tommy Rees is a finalist for the job.
No self respecting coach is going to take that job with Saban “overlooking him” from his office in the stadium.
Honestly, the mere thought of that is laughable. If you don’t think so, I’ll point out that Nebraska had the same setup with Tom Osbourne AND the already mentioned Tennessee with Phillip Fulmer. Look at the following 10 years of those two programs after those two “retried” from coaching.

Saban will still be the most powerful man on that campus after he “retires”. No one is brave enough to tell him NO, and he will be allowed to do whatever he wants with the football team. I wouldn’t be surprised to even see Nick become AD at some point. Now it makes sense that they went from Sark, to Lanning and all of sudden Reece is a candidate. No proven HC will come in and not she full control of the team with oversight from the previous coach. This search could be worse than Nebraska and Tennessee had following Osbourn and Fulmer.

Probably why he still wants an office at BDS.

If Coach Saban is still there he could unretire.

Saban hired former head coaches as advisers, it didn’t seem to hurt anything. We’ll see.

This is not gonna work out well. You are looking down the barrel right now at replacing Saban with Reece. I thought Alabama football was better than that? They really gonna let Saban have a say in who the next HC is and he is gonna put someone there who he can control. There’s a reason why he was still interviewing coordinators the day before he “retired”. He wants to keep the current staff in place as much as possible and put someone out front and he pull the strings from behind the scenes.

Similar thing happened with LSU basketball after Dale Brown retired. Brown retires but stays in BR and is around the program. John Brady didn’t take it well. He has even said it was in part to his downfall. Most of the time when there is a coaching change the coach is gone and out of the picture.
Any coach that saw the Reece Davis interview saw him say he could still chew a player out because he would be right around the corner. That has to be in some of these coaches minds. Ego maniacs all.

This is hilarious.
Saban's gonna burn it all down.
Suh-weet!

Unfortunately, this is also true.

Yeah this tells me no quality big name/time coach comes near this job
Expect a young up and coming coordinator type or a hotshot G5 type who would relish being mentored by the GOAT

All during the Saban era at Alabama everybody said he was leaving, everybody said he was done, etc. Well just like they underestimated him, you might be too. I was just putting it out there.
He could be the next Alabama head football coach
But if not, he has succeed where others around the nation have failed. I would not bet against him

I’m getting “Brett Favre has retired/Brett Favre has come out of retirement” vibes here.
Rees will get the job. Nick will monitor but TRY to not be overly involved. The team starts sliding. Nick gets heavily involved and is the first administrative person in history to be on the sidelines with the HC headset on.

As far as I'm concerned, CNS can do whatever he likes. 6 titles will give you that kind of clout.

It’s no different than Bryant coaching from the grave
