quote:I disagree about the "tarnishing his legacy" thing. P5 CFB coaching has become a year round job with no true off-season so there really is no good time for such a coach to announce he's stepping down.

Having said that, I'm also surprised he did it this way without a plan in place. We seem to have this image of him being the Godfather of Bama football and as such wouldn't give up the top seat without proper succession. Here's the thing...if he had stepped down after his last natty I think Sark is leading Bama now, that's how much Nick believed in him. As it is now all of his past coordinators/position coaches who were worth a damn either already have good jobs (Sark, Kirby, Kiffin, Dabo) or flamed out and are now sitting back counting their aggy bucks. (Jimbo) As it is now Bama will have to waaay overpay (aggy style, 100% guaranteed) to grab one of the big names, or go the humble and sensible route and start looking at guys like Lance Lieopold or Chris Klieman. Kansas and K-state arent exactly destination schools, but both are very good coaches that have had success at the lower levels and P5. Just my $.02

What is this cuck mentality? He didn't coach for free.
Bama paid him for National Championships and he delivered national championships. The deal was fulfilled by both parties, ergo, he owes Bama literally nothing.

"As it turns out, what I learned from that experience in hindsight was, it was a huge mistake to leave college football," Saban said. "And I know a lot of LSU fans think I left for whatever reasons, but I left because I wanted to be a pro coach, or thought I wanted to be a pro coach. We loved LSU. We worked hard to build the program. If there was one thing professionally that I would do over again, it would've been not to leave LSU."
total BS!! good riddance

Saban gave Bama - and college football itself - more than he took. He can go out anyway he wants.

This!
This is the best and most correct statement anyone has made regarding Coach Saban's retirement. And he gave to more than just Bama. He showed LSU that there were more championships to be delivered to Baton Rouge and not to think that 1958 would be the last one.
He's a fine coach and an exceptional person. I haven't heard anything but love for him from his former players at Bama, at LSU, and at Michigan State. His is an example to be followed by those seeking success at any level of life.

He’s 72 freaking years old man. I don’t blame him one bit especially with the way college football is headed. I don’t see how anybody would want to be a head coach in today’s college football.

Will you bitches ever get past this? The man could've returned when Lesley was fired and still been in redstick. The fact is and hold on to your wet panties, HE DID NOT WANT TOO. There, it's been said now the healing can begin.

No it fricking doesn't. His legacy is beyond secure. He doesn't belong to you or me or Alabama or anybody else. Let him live on his own terms. Be thankful for what he did and wish him well.
