I requested an anchor on this thread twice so far, but it still has a sticky. Will a couple of you request an anchor on this one so we can channel all of the discussion to the recruiting thread?

But I'm kinda glad that this shitty, worn out discussion isn't in the recruiting thread.

Edit: just joking , I went ahead and asked for an anchor

Hopefully. I got really sick of people dogging him all the time. Estrada isn't an explosive athlete by any stretch of the imagination, but he's quick and he's pretty relentless when it comes to getting the ball into the paint. Anyone who has paid attention the last 5 years knows that our offense needs to be able to consistently get the ball into the paint to be at its best. Limiting our paint touches means you limit our ability to score in all the ways we like the most, i.e. kick out 3s, dunks, layups, and FTs.

If it will help I can piss some people off like I did in the football thread a week ago but I think Swashbuckler has that covered

Estrada was also really good rebounding out of the guard spot. I enjoyed his offensive bag, too, which you typically don't see out of dudes his age. Those little teardrops, lane pivot moves, bank fadeaways, etc. are things you usually only see out of that overweight 40-year-old dad playing pickup at the YMCA who somehow nobody can stop.

Estrada was a straight up dawg. He hustled his arse off, and left it all on the floor. He had his erratic moments, but never half assed it. Sure, it would've been nice if his 3fg% was closer to his Hofstra numbers. But I've got nothing but love for him, and feel he caught way more flack he deserved. And I'm not talking during a game thread, where even the most rational fan temporarily turns into a lunatic.

He definitely should. Scouts don't really care about a couple good (or bad) tournament games. They want to see consistency. Huge if true.

For sure. We would have been up shite creek without him.

Oddly enough, the Bama Hoops community page on Twitter was the worst about it. People constantly questioned why he was starting, and called him out, of all players, as selfish and lazy. Pretty sure the dude led us in blue collar points this year (tough to do as a guard), and was far and away our best set-up man, so basically the opposite of lazy and selfish. A bad turnover every now and then turns you into "selfish" and "lazy", I guess...

Early in the year I told my brother I thought Estrada was my favorite on the team.

More than a few missed lay ups dropped him down a couple of notches but he’s still very under appreciated

The truth is that most people don’t know ball. Certainly not the modern game. You see this with football too where people just say shite they heard in a sports bar or while watching Hoosiers 30 years ago, but basketball it’s almost worse.

It’s always been that way but people being online gives a voice to the should be voiceless and you feel like you have to try to correct them but then it’s 4 hours later and you’re still arguing with a moron online instead of doing your laundry. And they ain’t got shite to do but argue. So they’ll always win

I was hoping he’d stick around and be a 4 year player. I was only off by 3 years.

Sam in the portal

That is surprising, he is perfect for the system if he learned how to play better defense. And we've sustained success both as a program and putting guys in the league, so he should be motivated to stay. Wonder if that means Nelson is coming back. Because Walters and him play almost the same position. Though Walters is a bit better shooter.

I fricking hate the portal.

Sam would be perfect at a Samford type school. Griffen may go to a UAB type school.

It's not a matter of them being "perfect for the system" anymore. I totally agree that Sam would thrive here if he stayed put. However they want money and they wanna start

I know I’m in the minority on this, and didn’t voice my opinion because I don’t like being negative while layers are still on the team, but I am very ok with Walters hitting the portal. I think we can upgrade that position. His shooting was really good from the corner but he didn’t add much outside of that. Lateral quickness is lacking. Early in the year I wanted him welded to the bench, but he got a bit better(as freshmen should) but I’m still not crying over losing him.

Best of luck to him though unless he ends up someplace I hate.
