Shortening the game...

Not stopping the clock for first downs doesn't make much difference because the real problem is the excessively large number of lengthy commercials and promos along with stupidly agonizingly slow replay reviews.
Solutions?
1. Replay reviews can be sped up by having them called in the booth with a nice sized screen and replay control that can quickly call up and sync multiple angles to scrub through at any speed. It's not brain surgery these days. Refs calling it on the field with tiny screen and clumsy remote is a really bad way to do it.
2. Limit commercial breaks that stop the game. Move ads to within the screen, verbal hyping, lower 1/3's, over lays and such. There are plenty of open spaces between plays to collect ad money without diminishing the game.
Watched half of the Navy/ND game yesterday. Aside from it being lopsided, the flow of the game was nearly unwatchable. NBC used any excuse to cut to a commercial break even replay reviews. The breaks were long. NBC had crappy camera work and even missed a couple of play starts while showing B-roll and color stories.

Im glad its shortened, that way we dont have to watch more of the same terrible football product Auburn puts on the field year in and year out. Auburn football is a joke

I've always thought there should be a 45 sec clock. No call within 45 sec, call stands.

I have always thought the person upstairs can see it within seconds. Just call down and say lets go.

Should be shown as part of the broadcast and on the jumbotrons too. If the software control is set up right, it would sync up all cameras automatically and run/scrubbed side by sided if it's clearer.

In the Florida game last night the ref was trying to determine if FL had a catch. It was a tough call. ESPN cut to commercials for quite a while and came back to the game the ref was still studying his little screen. That's a really dumb way to do it when it would be easy enough to call it from the booth with an easy to see rig, smart controller and a nice sized monitor.
I hate it that the NCAA is shortening the game by cutting the game itself while commercials, promos and announcers blathering takes up so much time. It makes it hard to watch games where I only have marginal interest.

By the end of the season people will be screaming at the sky about this. It sucks and the games will not be the same. Epic comebacks and last minute drives to win the game?
It’s already morphing into basketball on grass (credit: jang) and now this. Awful.

I’m thinking of one guy in particular that’s probably go no problems AT ALL with shortening the game by at least a second or so??

Even in the stadium watching a live game, those long commercial breaks are annoying has hell.
There are other ways to work in paying commercial messages without screwing up the game. Sure I'll put up with it for an Auburn game, but its bad for the sport over all.
Having been in the video and media production business for decades, there are a lot of ways to keep commercial messages without obstructing the game beyond all tolerance.

I don’t see why they don’t do more of the half screen commercials during transitions after a kickoff and stuff like that. They always just go to the broadcasters for bullshite. Keep the game the same length and utilize your time better without having to go to full breaks.

On the CBS 2:30 games…they should just cut directly to Gary Danielson on a “spit-screen” licking Saban’s balls in real time during the commercial breaks so you don’t miss any “live action”

While there is a slow down on the field and nothing happening, put the game cam in a window and do mini-commercials as long as they don't miss or step on plays with adequate head and tail.

Chip Kelley is not happy with the clock rule changes. "I hope you guys sell a lot of commercials."
I'd kind of like to watch the LSU/FSU game tonight but with many long commercial breaks, I'll probably just catch some highlights tomorrow.

I started counting the number of commercials during change of possession, time outs, etc.
The largest number was 9 followed by a reality show ad. By counting I did not have to pay attention to the ads.

I'm convinced it was done so the networks can get more ad revenue. The games' airtimes aren't shortening while the games themselves are. That means they're just airing more commercials.

The game itself might be shorter, but the entire broadcast is the same. That means we got less game and more commercials.
We gotta make the game better for the fans, right?!

Yeah they are nickeling and diming against our sanity with that one possession less each game just for more commercials.
I hope someone goes to hell for this.
