So move the SEC headquarters to Nashville

The geographical center of the conference is closer to Birmingham, especially when you include OU & Texas

I for one love this stuff, well done.

In my head I don't think of both Texas schools being that close. Pretty wild considering how mind-bogglingly large that state actually is.

For example, the distance between the University of Houston and Texas El-Paso/UTEP is roughly 675 miles (!).

Drove a motorhome from Houston to El Paso about 7 years ago and there is a heaping pile of nothing but Texas in Texas. I-20 dead ends into I-10 in the middle of nowhere...

Great thread!

You would think that Florida might want to consider playing some in state non-conference teams since they rack up the most frequent flyer miles. Just a thought.

15. Florida – Average miles: 598

FSU - 129 miles
Auburn – 277 miles
Miami - 294 miles
Georgia – 304 miles
South Carolina – 312 miles
Alabama – 396 miles
Tennessee – 445 miles
Mississippi State – 463 miles
Vanderbilt – 520 miles
LSU – 528 miles
Ole Miss – 533 miles
Kentucky – 593 miles
Arkansas – 818 miles
Texas A&M – 840 miles
Missouri – 858 miles
Texas – 921 miles
Oklahoma – 959 miles

Who else has 2 non-conference teams in their state that have won national championships this century? Anyone? Anyone?

Those long distance matchups are REALLY brutal for the other sports. It's a lot of money and logistics to send a baseball or softball team nearly 1000 miles to play a series.

Yeah, I’d like to see a season cost of all travel for something like Softball.

Only one of these teams is on State's 2024 schedule

Once you get on an airplane, the travel costs aren't going to change a whole lot within the SEC footprint (travelling from LA to Piscataway, NJ would be a bit different). But, that's why, in my opinion, you want to try to have your schedule set up so that you play the closest schools every in non-revenue sports. It makes no sense, to my mind, that we are going with a 2/8 schedule for baseball (which doesn't work out even mathematically) when a 5/5 schedule would allow you to play everyone every other year, and still keep more of those bus ride matchups intact.

Fans and sportswriters complained that the first two weeks and the week before Thanksgiving didn’t have enough good games, so here we are.

I know State isn't the biggest TV draw in the conference so we'll just get fed a shite sandwich and have our historic series done away with, but in 2024 they scheduled:

State vs. Florida
State vs. Georgia
USC vs. Alabama
USC vs. LSU

Does that really add more juice to the TV ratings than State playing Bama and LSU and South Carolina playing Georgia and Florida? I just really don't understand it.

Would AU have ranked #1 prior to latest round of westward expansion? Always thought of Auburn as being at the center in the past

If I recall correctly, AU was #1 prior to Texas A&M and Missouri joining the conference.

1. Alabama – Average miles: 345

LSU – 285 miles

As someone who has driven this 4 or 5 times a year since 1980,this is at least 60 miles too few.

They did straight line as the crow flies.

Tennessee to Georgia – 144 miles

Google maps says driving from Neyland to Sanford is 236 miles.

As the poster above said, these are straight line distances and not driving distances.
