Agree. I didn't care much for the hire at the time but shite, I'm getting pretty excited to see the defense in a few weeks.

That likely cost him the championship that year, too, and he was aware of that.

I still don’t know about that. The offense was garbage against Washington and Kiffin’s playcalling was trash. I’m not so sure that a distracted Kiffin with no fear of Saban would’ve been any better in the National Championship game.

If he said combined it’s not only a lie, it’s laughably false.

In 2021 there were 162 3rd down attempts with 74 conversions and 88 failures. 16 4th down attempts were made, so at most were looking at 72 3 and outs, and yet only 45 punt attempts were made.

You’re saying we didn’t have at least 72 three and outs from 2021 going back 15 years? I bet we had more in 2021 and 2020, let alone cumulative going all the way back to 06-07

We had around 35 three-and-outs last year, including turnovers in the 1st 3 downs and failed 4th down conversions.

There's no way that stat holds up

We had 7 three-and-outs in the 2016 loss to Clemson when we couldn't move the ball just one freaking time to give the defense a rest.

Think about the above sentence and then dismiss the opinion of anyone who claims this to be true or believes it.

It does sound unbelievable but I can't believe Fowler would just make something up like that.

There must be some mitigating factors we aren't taking into account.

I do know the 2018 starting offense didn't punt until like the 5th game of the season.

Perhaps he is saying the starting offense didn't have that many 3 and outs and he's excluding garbage time.

He probably just heard it somewhere else and decided to trust it outright rather than do 2-3 min of research to fact check it

It happens

Maybe.

I didn't listen to his show yesterday afternoon, but my buddy did and he said people were blowing up his phone line in disbelief, too.

Probably meant more three and out than any of the last fifteen years. (Despite being more talented than several of those teams, particularly on offense).

You're probably right. Last year may have had the most three and outs of any single year during that time frame. Wouldn't surprise me. The offense has depended more and more on the passing game the last few years. That can lead to getting behind the sticks, making it harder to pick up first downs. It seems like practicing against a passing offense all the time makes the defense eventually get more soft, too.

I could be wrong but I feel like I read a stat somewhere in the last 2-3 weeks that said we had more "back to back 3 and outs" last year than the last 5 years combined or something like that. And it was from a pretty legitimate source.

Where do you find stats like that?

As far as back to back 3 and outs that’s very possible.

But as far as having more in one season than the prior 15yrs combined? No way that’s right.

Whatever the stat actually is, I’m sure it’s embarrassing lol

I’d say the most embarrassing stat from last yr was penalties and it probably contributed to a lot of 3 and outs.

Even more so on defense. The 3rd & Golding stat.

if only two areas could have been cleaned up last year, it could have been a championship season. penalties and dropped passes. but the staff and players just couldnt get those cleaned up.

The "what if" of Kiffin calling the NCG is a really interesting one. Although lets not forget - the offense walked off the field for the last time with the lead in that one.

But don't forget the offense walked off the field after going 3 and out several times during that game which caused the Bama defense to be gassed at the end.

I just skimmed thru the play-by-plays for each game, only took a few minutes

Probably missed a couple

Let this sink in...It was said today that last year's Bama offense had more 3 and outs than the previous 15 years combined.

Is this even possible? There are only so many possessions a game. If the “15 year” teams averaged just one three and out per game, the 2022 team would have to have 15 per game to equal their combined total. I don’t think teams even have 15 possessions a game on average. That’s almost four per quarter.

Can’t be true.
