A lot of us asked for that during the last 3 years after seeing guys confused and playing scared. Well, we're gonna get it. Remember Steele's Auburn teams - let Brown/Davidson work up front, linebackers played with their hair on fire and back end played lots of aggressive zone. I'm not sure our DL is good enough to be dominant with that scheme, but I don't think we'll look lost and scared anymore. So that's at least a positive.

I do think with the caliber of player we have across the board it is silly to disable them by making them overthink things trying to get into the perfect play. We've all been screaming that for years now. That won't be an issue anymore. Steele runs pretty basic stuff and wants his guys to do it wide open and at full speed. That gets you lit up if you don't have great talent, but it can work if you do.

We'll just have to wait and see. I think the floor is pretty high because the talent in the last 2 classes across the board on defense is very good. I think we could also have no answers for really good offenses (so no different than now).

I honestly think this hire could end up being a one year deal with Pruitt being hired back once we learn the terms of his punishment.

This is basically what I just posted in the DC thread. I'm going to wait and see how it goes.

Spot on post. I’d also add that we don’t know what Armstrong is going to bring to the table.

I think in summary the coordinators are okay hires. It’s not as exciting as some of the names we heard thrown around, so I understand the disappointment.

On the flip side, our team looked poorly coached this year and at times in 2021. I’m talking about simple, non-scheme things like having the right number of players in the huddle, getting aligned on time, eliminating dumb penalties.

Just cleaning up stupid penalties probably gets us 12-0 this past season. We don’t necessarily need these to be great hires to take back control of the West and get back in the playoff. They just have to be competent.

To beat UGA though, they’re going to have to really hit.

I felt like Steele put a quality product on the field at Auburn. They played fundamentally sound defense. I think we will see that here. I know neither of them are flashy, but I don’t understand how some apparently think we can’t win a title with Steele and Rees and our talent.

1. He’s going to blitz more than we have. We desperately need that.
2. He’s a helluva recruiter.
3. He’s a short term guy for us until Pruitt is out of NCAA trouble. Steele prefers a 4-3 that’s why he never stays with Saban long.

I just dont want our pass rushers dropping in coverage on third down.

We've got to get better up front. It's not a coincidence that our best defenses featured guys like Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Dalvin Tomlinson. Tomlinson was an afterthought on those DL groups and I'd kill to have a guy like him now.

Only problem is Auburn didn't run the same defense Saban does. Auburn allowed their DL in a 4-3 to consistently rush up field. Ours are mostly asked to hold gaps and blockers while our middle linebackers fill from 5-7 yards deep. Either that or we have Will and Dallas drop into coverage instead of being in the defensive backfield.
If we got the same defense that Steele used at Auburn, I'd be fine with it.

There's nothing wrong with any of that. I'll rather have a simplified defense that our players can adjust to and make a faster impact than the complex trash BS that Golding was running. I could care less how good on the chalkboard you are if it doesn't translate on the field properly
