What I saw on the field after the Iron Bowl.

For years I went to all of Alabama's home games and numerous neutral site games but never went to true road games. I can therefore honestly say I have never actually been at a game where fans rushed the field. What I saw after almost every game, including this year's Iron Bowl, was players walking out toward midfield after the game and shaking hands, hugging, chatting, etc. Years ago they would actually take a knee at midfield and say a prayer together, I always assumed that was the FCA players but apparently no one does that anymore. There is nothing more intense than an Alabama Auburn game and to see the players mingling together after the game is just a good thing.
The best thing about it was that it always reminded me, even after very intense games, that while we fans think we "hate" each other, the players do not feel that way. They may have known each other during their high school days, recruiting trips, etc. and they know that in the future they may be teammates in the NFL. It always left me feeling a little better about things, even after a loss. To me this is so much better than crazy drunk fans rushing onto the field and putting players into bad positions which can then turn into bad reactions.
Yes, I'm an older conservative guy but I would still like to see more of this. I hope all my fellow ranters have a good day.

Alabama/Auburn has always been an extremely hard played but civil game on the field. Ashford and Young talked for a while afterwards and took pictures - was cool to see. Auburn played their guts out.

Now the Egg Bowl, on the other hand... more fights than the trashy Thanksgiving thread.

Great post
I always felt that fans in person although we want our teams to win badly, are mostly cordial to friendly.
I believe it gets blown out of proportion on the boards, but I yes I have noticed that the coaches and players are always a lot more social and friendly.

Been to several IBs and the fans in person are a 180 from what you see on social media. Auburn/leghumpers is a different story. frick that fanbase 6 ways to Sunday.

Not just on the field. I've been to a lot of Iron Bowls and never had issues with Auburn fans.
Agree, never had a problem with Bama Fans, we know how to live together. Most families have Auburn and Alabama. The players have always been respectful of each other.
Now UGA fans, terrible, just terrible.

I enjoyed watching that sportsmanship. It was a nice change of pace from the typical vitriolic displays.
Auburn was out of its depth, this year, however, Coach Lac saved our season, and got our guys playing well enough to, at the very least, make the game respectable.

The Iron Bowl seems to be a pretty civilized rivalry between the programs for the most part. Other rivalries like the Egg Bowl and the Game are much more nasty and they really hate each other. (Though Lane and Leach have toned down some of the raw hate in the EB) As a fan I love the nasty rivalries.

The IB is generally civilized on the field... not so much off of it. Other rivalries are much more vitriolic on the field (AU/UGA, UGA/UF, Ole Miss/MSU) but not as much off of it.

The internet is bad for being a haven for the worst of a group. No one should base their opinion of a group of people based on their online presence (except, I suppose, a group of internet celebrities).

Great post.
All fanbases have their assholes and the majority you see on message boards and social media. I've always gotten along well with Auburn fans in person as long as they were cordial. At the end of the day, it's just 18-23 year old collegiate athletes competing against one another.

Everyone talks about how "heated" this rivalry is, but the most heated you'll ever see it is when your two uncles get drunk at Thanksgiving and get into an alcohol fueled argument on whether Cam was better than Tua.
I've never once seen a fight at an Iron Bowl. Never. People talk more shite on message boards than in person.

I agree. I'm an older (and conservtive) guy, too, who remembers those days between UGA & GT....it used to be a very, very bitter rivalry, one of the most intense in the nation.....GT's competitiveness has diminished somewhat since then; nevertheless, back in those hated days, the players came together in unity, offered congrats and prayers at midfield, too.
Gone with the wind, now............
