Kelly, Smart or Heupel?
3 coach race at this point I’d think.
Kelly - amazing job with all the roster turnover
Heupel - similar to Kelly but a year later, kinda failed in biggest game
Smart - lost an NFL roster full of defensive players, another handful to the portal, didn’t go get portal guys just coached up those he had.

I think you’d have to throw Kiffin’s name in there too if the Rebs win this Saturday.

If Tennessee doesn't lose another game down the stretch, Heupel should be.

Kelly and Heupel both deserve it

Think it’s either Heupel or Kelly. Kirby has a team full of 5*’s that LSU and UT don’t have. UGA was picked to win the East. UT was picked #7 sec in pre season and LSU was like #8 or 9 I think.

Kelly.
Heupel is a good coach but what Kelly walked into and what he has done is nothing short of a spectacular coaching job.

I'm really trying to not be a homer and find an argument for Heupel over Kelly, but I can't find one.

When is the award given out? That could play a factor depending on how the rest of the season goes

And that's fair.

Hueple took over a team that was 3-7 and looking at sactions. Kelly took over a team that is rated #8 roster talent wise. You could make a strong case for co coach of the year.

I’d give the nod to Kelly. Guy had an absolutely depleted roster and is most likely headed to the SECCG with a victory over Alabama.
Wouldn’t argue against Heupel though.

As of right now, I'd go with
1. Heupel
2. Kelly
3. Smart
Tough competition between those 3, however.

They rarely give this kind of award to a coach that was great and continues to be great like Smart.
It tends to go to coaches who's teams were not good in prior years and then do well.
For example, Kirby won it in 2017 even though Bama won the title. He did win it in 2021 too... because he got UGA over the national title hump. But unless they get worse before having another great season or there's no coach who brought a team up significantly, he'll be passed over.
Saban probably should have 10 of these. He only has 5 (1 from LSU).
