Ask yourself this. What would smart record be if he was at UT? It’s easy to coach when you have the most talent of any team in the country. But what can you do when you are facing situations like Kelly and Heupel has.

Again... it's stupid to not think recruiting is part of coaching in college football.

It's probably the most important part.

Kelly, Kirby and Heupel are literally toss-ups in my mind.

I'm no fan of the CTY award due to giving it to a newcomer or someone who leads a comeback ... but you could make a case for Saban deserving it last year and 2020 but Saban definitely doesn't deserve it this year.

They can always have co-winners (like in 2012).

It won't be Heupel. SEC office is in Alabama and they hate Tennessee. Likewise, it probably won't be Kelly for the same reason. So probably Smart.

Remember, these are the same people who picked Bo Nix as SEC freshman of the year over Stingly who won every other national award.

1. Heupel
2. Kelly
3. Kiffin

Both Heupel and Kelly took over dumpster fires...more so with Heupel, imo.

Both have their teams overachieving and playing well

Kiffin had to scoop up a bunch of 'new' dudes in the portal and coach them up to come together as a team.

Lol @ all these folk using Kirby's five star recruits to argue against him, like getting five star recruits to come to the University isn't part of the coaching equation.

I get it, though. Both Heupel and Kelly walked into less than ideal situations, and are making chicken salad out of chicken shite.

I'd vote for Kelly, gun to head, but Heupel is a close second.

And, for the love of God, stop acting like recruiting is a black mark against folk for COTY, else you'll wind up with a Mullen. But, don't over inflate it, or you'll wind up with a Jimbo.

If LSU runs the table in the West, it has to be Kelly. Nothing else does justice to the honor.

So they can have co-winners again like in 2012.

One factor to consider is Kelly cobbled together this team which caused the team to take time to become what it is presently. He walked into only 37-39 scholarship players then went out, got some recruits and transfers who didn't know each other or had experience playing with each other and it took time to be a team. He's done a remarkable job with what he had to work with. Great respect for Heupel and Smart, also.

Kelly, Smart or Heupel?

3 coach race at this point I’d think.

Kelly - amazing job with all the roster turnover

Heupel - similar to Kelly but a year later, kinda failed in biggest game

Smart - lost an NFL roster full of defensive players, another handful to the portal, didn’t go get portal guys just coached up those he had.

My homer vote goes to Kelly.

My non-homer vote goes to... Kelly, too.

Smart, no. He won't get it for the same reason Lebron James didn't win it every year for a decade- he did what he was expected to do.

Kiffin was also expected, because of the 'boy-wonder' aspect. We knew he'd find a way to keep scoring. Getting ripped at LSU ended that, although if things go crazy and they win the SEC, you could revisit it.

Heupel was ahead of Kelly, but the head-to-head doesn't count. He lost to UGA and is out of the SEC championship, whereas Kelly beat Alabama and now likely is in.

Georgia is the best team, and it's not close this year

The irony is the media and fan talking points about losing 5 first rounders and 15 players to the draft.

This offseason had comparisons to former Auburn and LSU teams who fell apart and quickly got their coaches fired.

The reality is that the offense (which is improved as expected over last year) only has Broderick Jones (LT) and Darnell Washington (in-line tight end) as the only 5 stars leading the charge.
We have a former walkon QB
Leading receiver was turned down by an awful Tennessee roster (low 3 star).
Left guard for Tennessee was 3 star (Devin willock).
One of our 2 X receivers was a 3 star former walkon (Jackson Meeks).
Dillon Bell got about 15 snaps at receiver (high 3 star).
Our best receiver who is injured was a low 4 star (AD Mitchell).
Warren Ericson played both left guard and right guard against Tennessee (low 4 star).
Warren McClendon is our 3 year starting right tackle (low 4 star).
Our starting left guard who was injured for Tennessee is a low 4 star converted from tackle (Xavier truss)

One of the features of our offense is RB Kenny McIntosh who is a mid 4 star.

Muschamp and Sumlin were co winners in 2012. There were 3 winners in 08.
