Pittman - An illustration that the best leaders are too often overlooked

Sam Pittman is a great example of the idea that too often guys who should be leaders are not given that opportunity and too often guys who shouldn’t be leaders are given the opportunity.
Guys like Pittman are too humble, too focused on the task at hand, too team-oriented, and are too well-adjusted and happy with their life to play the games and employ the tactics that are often necessary to advance in this world. But those are the men who should be leading.
Pittman is a hell of a leader. He’s laser focused, he’s serious, he keep things simple and doesn’t care about trying to sell anyone on what he’s doing.
People who aren’t natural leaders themselves but find themselves in a position to hire leaders often see a guy like Pittman as “not suitable” to be given a big leadership position. “He’s not polished enough. Not corporate enough. Not pretty enough. The way he talks doesn’t generate instant excitement in my feeble brain.”
I love that Pittman has found himself at Arkansas and is doing what he’s doing, but I feel a little sick he wasn’t given an opportunity like this 10+ years ago, as he was capable of achieving so much more if given the chance.

Not bert; don't care.
That man was a conference treasure.
That man was a conference treasure.

Holy cow the delusion.
Do you work in the athletic department and are around Sam Pittman every week?
How do you know these things?
This writes like some gay novel. And as an Aggie I would know

Pittman is a casualty of the old adage, perception being the reality. No one passed on Pittman more than Arkansas though. You had him up close and personal and long claimed him as your own and yet couldn't see the obvious even in 2015 when he left Fayetteville for Athens.

To be fair, Aggy wouldn't know what a true leader was if it bit them in the rear

Arkansas has not been relevant since Petrino.

...and just what do you think the piece of crap we had for an AD during that time considered important?
Nothing but self-preservation and self-promotion.
Coaches were the least of our problems during that time... we had a cancer further up the chain that had to be removed.
The people who saw what Pittman brought to the position made multiple recommendations to the current AD who chose substance over flashy. Those people were respected former players.

Happens everyday, people want splash hires, big names, funky offenses.
But hiring a good, old fashioned football coach has worked since the sport was invented.

He was a conference embarrassment.

Are you suggesting that we should have bought out Bert on the spot and replaced him with Pittboss? I don't know that I would have been against doing that, but I don't remember him receiving head coach opportunities from other schools back then.
Regardless, we were the first to offer him the top job, and we were laughed at for doing it, so I'm not sure how you can honestly believe that "no one passed on him more".

I was pissed about the hire but for your post really sums up why I’m happy eating crow.
Pittman is exactly what our program needed. I assume he will have no issue hiring coaches in the near future because of the culture he has built

When has aggy EVER been relevant, other than in their own fantasies?
And Arkansas in the present is WAAAAYYY more relevant than aggy.

Eh wait till Briles and Odom leave.
He did a great job building that staff but there will always be Coordinator turnover and there are a lot more bad ones than good ones
