Tell me something. Which would be more accurate? A computer ranking that uses facts such as statistics, results, strength of schedule....or a bunch of sportswriters that cannot possibly watch all of the games?

Sports writers

Many of them did have opportunities to watch the games or at least were around at the time the games were played.

They probably had a better understanding about what they were reporting on than someone looking at stats 50 years later.

I'm not sure which one it was, maybe Sagarin, but at the end of 2019 after LSU won the championship, the computer rating still had LSU ranked behind Clemson and Ohio State.

Just my opinion though, I'm not much for revisionist history.

Seriously? You think a sportswriter had time to watch 20 or so games a week? More considering top 20 teams did not play each other every week. It would take more hours than one person had to watch all the games. Most probably didn't even watch all the games from the conference they were covering.

So people who never saw....look. Do you honestly believe that a sportswriter from California had a chance to watch Georgia play games? Very few games were televised in the 70's and earlier. And if you are talking about 1942 there MIGHT have been 2-3 games televised at all.

Neither am I and Georgia was consensus in 1942....but you seem to want to revise that.

Do you really believe a sportswriter in 1942 had a chance to watch a lot of football games?
Very few were even televised back then.

For the record....I am not arguing that Georgia should be ahead of LSU all time. LSU is still ahead of us as a program all time. I don't want our disagreement to be misunderstood.

Agree to disagree I guess

Revisionist because the majority of the selectors you are calling a consensus did not come to this conclusion until decades after the teams played.

Sportswriters didn't likely view all the games but had opportunity to do so. Are you of the assumption that sports writers didn't attend games? Games were also broadcast on radio with play by play announcers.

My point is, they were there during the era and probably understood the game and it's players better than someone looking at a computer generated report 50 years later.

Is it your opinion that Clemson won the natty in 2019 since one of the NCAA's selectors rated them higher than LSU after the championship?

Likewise, just having a conversation, nothing personal.

Depending on the metric, there are arguments that can be made for both schools as to their hierarchy in the conference.

That's okay. If we all thought alike it would be a very boring world.

Not in 1942, they didn't. In 1942 there might have been 1 or 2 games televised a week nationally. Chances are sportswriters out west never saw Georgia play.

In 1942? I am of the opinion that local sportswriters attended the games and then a recap general sketch of the game was sent out over the wire services like AP and UPI.
California sportswriters did not fly cross country tow watch Georgia games, and they were not generally televised.

Are you under the opinion that biases did not exist for regional teams? They do now and they did then. The larger media centers out west and in the northeast held considerable sway. I would say an unbiased person looking at statistics, strength of schedule etc probably had a much more unbiased view of team strengths. Even tody biases exist for Notre Dame that was formed abck in the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s.

You seem to forget that televised games were a rarity until the 80s and through today. There would be a couple of regional games but, except for bowl season people in Georgia would rarely see a west coast team play and west coast people rarely saw east coast teams play. I'm an old guy, so I remember those things.

Absolutely not. But the consensus says LSU won the championship, right? So it is immaterial. It takes more than one, right?

Look. It's time for me to go and work out. If you want to continue this we can later. But you are arguing against the criteria you set forth.(Consensus) That can't be a good thing.

We all would like to be Alabama and claim as many as we can.

Alabama
Florida
LSU
Auburn
Oklahoma
Texas
Georgia

So you're out of the top 6 technically.

everyone has Auburn wayyy too low. A few heisman winners, a few national titles, the one year with Cadillac where they should have made the title game.

I have them above UGA

If? If? Billy Ratliff pushed Brandon Burlsworth into stepping on Stoerner's foot. Great teams make their own breaks.

We remember those 7 wins and 6 losses. Hell of a season for the vols.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis. ESPN is looking for a good, objective analyst. Don't quit your day job.

You should learn how to use the quote function. As of now, your posts match the vols output on the field.

If Florida doesn’t get their bogus arse sanctions in the 80’s they probably have another title and at least two more SEC titles.

So, if Florida had been allowed to cheat they would have won more? That's your argument?

The 16-page letter received today listed 59 rules infractions and also included a provision under which the final year of probation and sanctions would be lifted if Florida complies with N.C.A.A. regulations during the first two years of the penalty.

59 violations?

According to the site LINK that a UGA fan listed, consensus national champions since 1950 (don't know why they started with that date).

Alabama - 13
LSU - 4
Florida - 3
Auburn - 2
Georgia - 2 (counting this year)
Tennessee - 2
Arkansas - 1
Ole Miss - 1

The only year that I wish Alabama wouldn't claim is 1941. All the others are consensus or the early Rose Bowl wins/championships.

Oh please, every B6 member has done the same shady shite.

Florida automatically ranks higher than Georgia since they hung half a hundred at Hedges in the worst Georgia home loss in their programs history

First, that’s a retarded take. Second, it’s not even factual.

Other than 1980 & 2021 that's listed, please name the 3rd year that Georgia won the consensus national championship in football since 1950.

You have to rank Florida ahead of UGA, because of Spurrier, Tebow, and 3 national championships sandwiched in between Georgia's two.

So Florida gets the "recent" nod between the two.

LSU really confuses the issue, with Natty's between Saban, Miles, and Yaw yaw. They really make an argument.

All time? Tenn is still #2.

There's no confusion on #1. Bow down, bitches. RMFT.
