What Barners Don’t Understand About Lane Kiffin

I’ve seen enough silly Auburn-Kiffin talk to feel compelled to explain what Auburn fans are getting wrong about the situation.
First, a couple of disclaimers: 1) Auburn might successfully hire Lane Kiffin despite the reasons I say they probably won’t. 2) Auburn is a more prestigious program than Ole Miss and a better job despite all current dumpster fires w/in the program.
BUT, Auburn isn’t competing against Ole Miss for Kiffin’s signature and that means that Auburn’s odds of hiring him are much worse than the average Aubie fan realizes.
Ole Miss is a stepping stone job for Kiffin and Auburn is a destination job. The thing is, it’s probably not the destination job Kiffin wants and he doesn’t want another stepping stone. Auburn is competing against blue-bloods for Kiffin, not Ole Miss. How does Auburn compare to Bama, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma or the NFL? Kiffin has already shown patience at this stop, and as long as he’s at Ole Miss he has job security and will be a highly sought after candidate for the best jobs in football.
Kiffin will be gone when the right job comes along, but that probably won’t be Auburn this year. As an Ole Miss fan, I’m just enjoying the ride and hoping the job Kiffin wants doesn’t open up for a couple years. We’ll see.

Reasonable. Is Kiffin spending more time in Boca Raton really a problem?

Kiffin will follow nil
Eventually he wants to play for natties
Can he compete for natties at ole miss?
With expanded playoff he can get access for sure

In other words he will wait and see if Alabama calls in a couple years.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he has those aspirations. I think he actually would have taken the Miami job last year but the U fricked up and hired Cristobal.

I strongly believe he's biding his time for the Bama job. The only problem with waiting too long is every season is a chance for his stock to also plummet like it did at USC. Ole Miss doesn't have the expectations of USC but enough mediocre seasons and those big jobs will give him less of a look. Especially once the SEC expansion happens and he doesn't have scheduling luck to avoid the better teams from the East all the time because every 2 years everyone will be playing everyone then.
Let's be 100% honest, what is Kiffin's biggest win at Ole Miss so far? Kentucky this year? Arkansas and A&M last year? Props to at least not being in the cellar but he hasn't taken Ole Miss anywhere it hasn't been before. He got fired at USC for his shitty defenses, got left on the tarmac when Arizona St hung 60+ on him and enough was enough. He got lucky to catch last year's Tennessee and this year's Kentucky and not the reverse if you want my honest opinion.
He's a great OC but I'm still not completely sold on him being a HC, especially at a blue blood school.

Four wins over top-15 opponents in 2 1/2 seasons is pretty good by Ole Miss standards.

A bowl win over 2020 covid year Indiana after losing to that shitty LSU team. A win over 2021 Arkansas while still giving up 50+ in regulation, a win over 8-4 A&M who finished unranked and ran away from Wake Forest, and a win over this year's Kentucky who is now unranked and looked very unimpressive to me doing so.
Sorry man, I'm just not sold. I may be wrong but I was skeptical of Kiffin coming out of FAU and he just hasn't won me over yet.

If Tank Bigsby falls down inbounds we tie for the SEC West last season and we control our destiny in the West this season going into the Bye week. Don’t expect us to beat Bama but everything I’ve said is true all the same. People like you try to make lite of what Lane has done in Oxford but considering what he walked into and where we were 3 years ago at this point it’s pretty incredible. Our Oline absolutely mauls DEs and LBs.

It’s not about whether Lane has Ole Miss playing for national championships, it’s about how he is over-performing compared to the average season at Ole Miss and is doing it without going full Hugh Freeze as far as off the field stuff.

I gave him props for not being in the cellar anymore. But his defenses are still a crux. Maybe he could get better defensive assistants at a school like Bama but he's already been at a blue blood before and fielded terrible defenses there too.
He's an outstanding OC, offensive mind. That can win over the hearts of Ole Miss faithful but at Bama? Idk man I just don't see it. He may get the chance to prove me wrong one day but I'll remain skeptical until I see something to convince me otherwise.

He won 10 regular seasons games in year 2 of a total rebuild for the first time in Ole Miss history. We are on track to win 10 again despite loosing almost everyone from last year. Whether you are impressed or not, he's done a heck of a job at Ole Miss competing in the SEC.

I guess that's fair enough but I'd at least like to see him get a bigger win that anything he's gotten so far though because I've outlined his biggest wins in his Ole Miss tenure so far and pretty much all those big wins turned out to be fools gold. He's gotten absolutely boat raced by Bama both times he's played so far and got ran out of Tiger Stadium two weeks ago.
And I'll fully admit I've been skeptical ever since he got the job. I probably have some bias in me. Even before he got hired at Ole Miss and was still at FAU I was skeptical of anyone hiring him. And I guess I just haven't seen that kind of signature moment from him at Ole Miss yet. Or maybe I've just overestimating what can be done at Ole Miss but I've seen Houston Nutt and David Cutcliffe and Hugh Freeze have successful seasons at Ole Miss and then flame out by the end (scandals aside Freeze had a losing season his last year there). I'm not convinced it won't happen to Lane at some point at this point in time

I think that's reasonable, and I also don't think you're telling Auburn people something we're not considering.
If LK is reasonable, and Auburn wants him and he wants to go but is considering holding out for one of a handful of higher end gigs, then he'll have to factor a) whether he'll sustain success long enough to be attractive for those b) when they'll come open and the likely competition and c) the alternatives if he waits and gets passed over.
Ultimately you're talking about a handful of jobs that might come open once or twice each during Kiffin's prime coaching life, and there's a good chance he won't be as hot as he is now and/or that there will be other candidates in the mix, perhaps better ones. I've long suspected the AU job is attractive to Lane because we'll pay dumb money and because he'll be squarely in huge rivalries with arguably the best two coaches in CFB. That might be a downside for some, but I'm not sure on LK.
Anyway, all good thoughts. If he's content to hang at OM for an unknown period, you could be right.

For sure. I think most coaches take the first big job when it opens because if they wait for the perfect job, they risk missing their chance entirely. But I also think Kiffin feels pretty confident that he’ll keep winning at Ole Miss in the short-term and I expect him to leave after next season if not after this year.

Yeah but to be fair, the west has been shite with the exception of Bama the last 2 years.

I don’t think anyone can count on a coach more than 4-5 years anymore. I’ll take my chances with Kiffin. It’d be fun. Just like it has been for Ole Miss.

He’s never leaving oxfart baw. Best school in SEC.

In 2019, 3 sec West teams ended the season ranked. In 2021, 3 sec West teams ended the season ranked. This year, 3 sec West teams will end the season ranked.
