Emmitt went 0-3 vs Auburn.
Dude got a huge ovation at the Citrus Bowl half time when AU played USC after the '86 season, iirc.
UF bought him. He wanted to go to Auburn. He hugged Dye after every game. He cried after the first one. My Uncle's wife worked for Gulf Power in Pensacola. Emmitt's Mom got a cushy job there about a week after he signed.

Around the same time I remember Dexter McCluster seeming he was gonna score literally everytime he touched the ball

His family was tight with the Levins brothers, for whom the UF School of Law is named. It was pretty well known around town, the fact that Dye made inroads with Emmit was pretty impressive.
Of course a well-timed leaked story that came out a couple of weeks before NSD about Brent Fullwood dropping all of his classes in the fall of ‘86 to concentrate on football (knowing he had no intention of graduating) put to rest any thought of us stealing him away from the Gators.
Funny story: the previous Christmas, when there was still a slim chance he would sign with AU, I got one of his teachers at Escambia HS to get him to autograph a t-shirt and gave it to my cousin. When Emmitt signed with UF my cuz used the shirt to wash his car and ruined the autograph, then threw it away in a fit of pique.
15-20 years later, when Emmitt had broken the NFL rushing record and was a first-ballot HOFer, he regretted that decision

This would make more sense if he had gone to Auburn. Back then Gulf Power was owned by Southern Company and the powers that be for Southern were based in Birmingham even though their official Headquarters are in Atlanta.

Technically, Emmitt & I worked together there in the winter of ‘86, just as he was signing with UF. I say “technically” because he worked on Tuesday & Thursday evenings while I worked Mondays and Wednesdays, so I never actually met him

So y'all were best friend / co-workers.
But seriously, I guess that makes sense, I didn't know about the public access gig.

Wow...so many to choose, of course Hershel, Dion but Culpepper had a great game against us, Spurrier, Farve, others have mentioned many more but there are so many that I am forgetting...

Emmitt Smith is a close second
Except Emmitt could never bring it against Auburn.
Probably because he felt guilty choosing the financial investment he took picking UF over the Heisman Trophy and National Championship he likely would have won at Auburn.

I know he cried after the '89 game too. Slack to Wasden with 26 seconds left ( on 4th and 11 ) stunned the Gators.
Emmittt

Randall Cobb played well against us.
So many good players since our competition is elite.

He is one of my favorite non-AU players. Loved watching him ball. Dude was a force.

Yep. I thought he could have been an all time great in a better situation

His team was shite
They weren’t too bad. They had a running back Tony Smith and a receiver Michael Jackson (Dyson) that played in the pros

We made Reggie Ball look like Peyton Manning

He finished at Alabama in 1987.
Never played in Jordan Hare.

Thank you. That is how far the memories of him go back.
