First and foremost, I'm not talking about him as a head coach... I'm talking about him as a defensive coach (I think everyone is well aware of his status as a head coach).

Throughout his time at Auburn, we've always denied and deflected the thought of him possibly helping out with the defense when Ted Roof was defensive coordinator. I think it's apparent that he was, indeed, "helping" with the defense. The defense was a steaming pile of shite from 2009-2011 (improving under BVG, so far), yet I still want some answers. Since he was helping with the defense, it's understandable that the clash between Chizik and Roof truly affected the scheme and performance. Why didn't Chizik just take over the defense as a whole? Think about it, did he just forget how to coach? Auburn's defenses in 2003 and 2004 was damn near great, and Texas also had damn good defenses under him. Did he just inherit great players when he got the defensive coordinator jobs at Auburn and Texas? If the reigns were given to BVG, by himself, I believe we would see another great Auburn defense. However, are we completely sure that Chizik doesn't also have his hands tied? Bamasgot13 made an interesting post today saying BVG wouldn't be back, and with his connections I believe him.

It's just amazing to see the total lack of player development here at Auburn. My God, we have so much talent, and we just CAN'T develop anyone really. And I really wouldn't be surprised if the recruits starting to jump ship. They'd be smart to, as they have offers from schools that can develop them and give them great football coaching. It sucks saying we can't.

I think we need to start at the top:

1) Fire Jay Jacobs
2) Fire Gene Chizik
3) Hire a new Athletic Director (we suck in everything)
4) Hire a coach that can fricking coach, and is hard-nosed
5) Try to convince him to retain BVG, Boulware, and Grimes as they are our best coaches
6) Take a lot of the National Championship stuff down, and make these kids know it's something you have to earn

I know the chances of this happening are slim, but something has to be done...

Stop hiring coaches on "character" and start hiring them on accomplishments/records. 5-19?

Gene Chizik at Iowa State

2007 3-9 Beat Iowa, Kansas State, Colorado... lost to Kent State,Northern Iowa, and Toledo
2008 2-10 Beat South Dakota State and Kent State... lost to UNLV

Paul Rhoads turned ISU from a bottom feeder to team that is competitive, never gives up, and will most likely make a bowl every year.

Everyone is praising his recruiting but he failed in recruiting.

At the most important positions.

Then did not develop the defensive guys he got.

I'm not sure about Texas, but I'd attribute his defense at Auburn to Tuberville. Our D-coordinator spot was a revolving door under Tubs, but our defense was always solid.

I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Paul Rhodes here as the next HC. Dude's tough as nails and could work wonders with the talent we have on this roster.

Chizik just isn't a head coach. Some coaches are, some coaches aren't. He definitely falls into the latter category.

But as far as what's happened to him as a defensive whiz, I have no idea. It really is strange. But I fully believe he tries to stay hands-off at first, but then once he doesn't like what he sees, he puts in his input and tries to control what goes on on both sides of the ball.

What's weird is everyone says Chiz isn't a head coach. But the dude says all the right stuff and seems more organized than anyone. His priorities seem strong and he really seems to care.

But it all just doesn't translate into productivity on the field..

Agree with all of this. But it just gets so tiring talking about it. It's just fricking terrible where we are right now as a team with the way they recruited. No reason not to be competitive in every game. No reason we shouldn't have a serviceable QB. It's depressing but nothing we can do about it right now and that just the way it is. Have to deal with this bullshite. If you cant handle it as a fan then stop rooting for AU.

This is not a knock on anyone just in general.

Grimes sucks, our o-line sucks. What has he ever done? Should be fired.

The Oline was trash on Saturday. We gave up 8 sacks to a team that had 7 TOTAL through 4 games.

Some of those sacks were on Frazier. He cant stand back there for 15 seconds... He cant get rid of the ball thus he will be sacked

If we actually hire a new coach, I don't care what happens with these guys.

Grimes sucks

No our QB sucks because he's a pussy and holds the ball forever, though Miller played like shite yesterday. We need Young healthy.

Each of them have been a bright spot during their time at Auburn, which is why I'd love to see them return. Boulware has the special teams looking great, Grimes has done work with a very young offensive line, and BVG could work wonders with a defense.

Just my opinion...

Everyone else can GTFO, though...

So what? 2 sacks on Frazier? So we only "almost" doubled their season total? 4 sacks is unacceptable guys, 8 is unreal to a team that averaged less than 2 a game prior to that...

He kind of did.

If you look at his career, you'd be hard pressed to find a guy who has benefited more from being in the right place at the right time. He joined an Auburn team that was loaded with talent and was just waiting to blow-up on both sides of the ball. It was a roster that had both NFL talent as well as seniority(in 03 and 04). This was also under the umbrella of Tuberville...and everyone knows that no matter who our DC was, our "identity" was always the same under Tuberville. He had a lot to do with that success. Chizik then used that stage to vault over to Texas where they had a shite-ton of talent as well, including some guy named Vince Young. His defense at Texas strongly declined in 06 after the MNC year. Chizik then decides to go to Iowa State where reality hits him square in the nose. Through some miracle he's able to somehow get the promotion equivalent of the fry-guy at your local McDonalds being promoted to National V.P. of Operations. He hits a home-run hiring Malzahn and his offense blindsides everyone in the SEC on way to having a successful 8-win opening season. What happens next? He pretty much accidentally walks into Cam Newton and a QB/OC combination that is so elite that it carries an ~8 win type team all the way to an undefeated MNC season. Chizik had to be talked-into offering Newton a scholarship, and even more importantly we dont see the Cam Newton we saw without Malzahn behind the wheel. A double lottery-win. The 2010 mirage ends and you see the reversion back to the Gene Chizik of Iowa State.

Our defense has taken a step forward. It's not there, but it's coming along.

Overall we are regressing. The offense is a nightmare. Our line isn't working. We're not creating running lanes and we're not offering protection for our QB. Though, I sometimes wonder how many of those sacks saved interceptions.

I think the defense continues to improve enough to give Chizik next year easily. I don't agree with it, but progress on defense and his buyout will likely be enough to push him through. Obviously if the offense doesn't start working we'll let Lefty go.

I'm very withdrawn from the season. I feel like college football has been robbed from me this year.

Me too. I used to be excited and get super nervous for our games, I was shaking the whole Clemson game, but now I just watch expecting to lose. I get more excited for USC-UGA and LSU-FLA type games.
