I don't agree that this is the plan at all. All three of those are firmly on path to make the playoffs, which makes their already highly unlikely odds even more contentious because the time-frame of when you can even hire them is later than any realistic candidate. If you wait and swing and miss on any of these (and lets be real, none of them are leaving their current Playoff job to come here) then who can you even fall back to? You're not falling back to Dillingham in that case. You are falling back to Charles Kelly, my guy.
I don't believe that Cohen is that stupid. And look at the names you brought up. Lanning has a ~$20M buyout that he owes if he leaves and reportedly up to ~$20-30M in Nike stock compensation that he loses if he leaves. That guy is not leaving Oregon nor does he have any reason to leave Oregon. So no, John Cohen absolutely does NOT need to wait and exhaust all efforts to make Lanning "say no" because it is a losing proposition from the start.

Yeah I doubt Lane, Lanning or Freeman come here unless we pay them 15M+
Their schools are going to match whatever we pay

I bet Brohm is gonna cost alot. Louisville has no problem spending money on football and won't just let him walk.
Just to note Brohm turned down Louisville after his first year at Purdue.
Doesn't seem like he is totally all about the money.
I'm sure UL will offer a lot and it seems his family really loves Louisville (obviously so does Brohm.
But I can easily see him saying now or never to compete at the highest level against UA and UGA.
Makes all the sense in the world to Cohen's first choice.

FWIW, Brian Daboll just got fired. The NY media has Lane near the top of the Giants interest list. (I personally doubt it, but take it fwtw).
It'll be interesting to see if Cohen interviews Daboll or any other NFL coaches.

You upvoted yourself didn't you?

Dilly’s name seems to be picking up steam, but it’s hard to tell if it’s Agent/Dilly trying to get more resources out of ASU or if the interest is real.

Both? Time to revisit Deion?

Not Daboll but I could see another former Giants head coach getting a shot. One who is currently Ole Miss QB coach and who Cohen nearly hired at MSU.

I mean a simple phone call will suffice to gauge interest. It won't take weeks or months to determine if any of the "big 3" would entertain offers.
You absolutely have to try if you're in Cohens shoes. He's fricked up twice. AU is bottom dweller now because. It's his last shot. Imagine being under that much pressure and saying Dilly is your guy lol.
Like I said we may end up with him but Cohen is swinging big. He may strike out quickly with a decent pool of guys to fall back on but if you're in his shoes and where AU is present day you make those calls first. You don't go straight to the tier 2 candidates.
Like many have said you're going to spend 6-9 million regardless.

How did Cohen mess up twice?
He has only hired Freeze

Not sure if already posted, but Durkin was at a QB club today.. He held a presser after and was asked about the AU job. He refused to answer directly but did say "I plan on being here long term."

Daboll has 25 years experience coaching in the NFL and has experience as an OC with a championship team in the SEC.

If I recall correctly, Bo tried to bring up Deion last time. They weren't hearing it. I doubt anything has changed.

What else is he supposed to say?

Because he has been killing it against his current level of competition?

Want a coach, not a sideshow. Deion is about DEION.

Yeah I think his job security is tied to this and I think he knows this. So I’m hoping he swings for the fences. At least try!!

He hired Moorhead at Moo State
Of the three HC he has hired Leach died (RIP), Moorhead was fired in 2 years (a disaster) and Freeze was fired in 2.5 (another disaster).
Now even if you consider Leach as a decent hire at the time it was considered to be a risky WTH? type of hire.
