FWIW, Brian Daboll just got fired. The NY media has Lane near the top of the Giants interest list. (I personally doubt it, but take it fwtw).
It'll be interesting to see if Cohen interviews Daboll or any other NFL coaches.

My #1 Brian Hartline.
I'd support a hire like that. It'll be interesting to see if Cohen interviews Hartline and/or any other coordinators (aside from Durkin).

His only 10-win season.
He didn't have a 10-win season at Purdue, but Purdue has only had one 10-win season in their history. And Brohm's 9-win season there in 2021 was their first since 2003.
Brohm's high-scoring pro-style offense with a strong defense would be a nice combination, I'm on board with that.
Lots of valid concerns about Fisher.
If that list of coaches is what we have to choose from, then it's a little bit disappointing.
I suppose Dillingham could be decent.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm not completely opposed to Fisher. I'd rather have him over Durkin and Kelly, and none of the other people on the candidate list are overly impressive, either.
Fisher had a very good tenure at Florida State. And while he didn't have the same success at Texas A&M, it wasn't as bad as people say it was:
2018: 9-4
2019: 8-5
2020: 9-1
2021: 8-4
2022: 5-7
2023: 6-4
His last two seasons at Texas A&M were not good, but the rest of his resume is much better than any other candidate we're considering.
If it was Fisher, are there any guesses as to who the OC would be?

Joey McGuire, the head coach at Texas Tech, would be an interesting candidate.
Texas Tech is currently 5th in total offense and 10th in total defense, which is a great reflection of their head coach.
And he's only making $4.5 million this year, so we could offer him a substantial pay raise.

If we hire Durkin, we completely lose the benefit of his skills, which are coaching defense and calling plays.
The success of our defense would be entirely dependent on which defensive coordinator he hires, and not on Durkin's coaching skills, because Durkin would not be HC/DC, he'd be HC only.
The counter-argument might be that Durkin would still help direct the defense and continue the defense's success, but if that was true, then why didn't he do that at Maryland? His defenses were terrible at Maryland (an average of 76th in the country in total defense).
And as bad as his defenses were as head coach, his offenses were even worse, with an average ranking of 103rd in the country in total offense.
His tenure at Maryland suggests that he does not manage a program well, he does not hire well, and he does not direct the defense or offense well.
He's a very good defensive coordinator, but his resume as a head coach is horrific.

The support for Durkin as head coach appears to be driven by the hope that his promotion will maintain our strong defense.
But there is no history to suggest that, in fact the opposite.
When Durkin was the head coach at Maryland, their defense was atrocious.
Maryland's average ranking in total defense in his 3 years was 76th.
If we promote Durkin to head coach, we're removing him from the position that he does well, and putting him in a position where he was previously awful.

There are several schools who've been successful hiring assistant coaches to be their head coach, including:
Ohio State
Oregon
Georgia
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Virginia
Mississippi State
I'm somewhat in favor of us finding an elite coordinator to be our next head coach.

From 1927 to 1929, Mike Donahue had 3 straight losing seasons. He was replaced the following year.
From 1946 to 1948, Earl M. Brown Jr. had 3 straight losing seasons. He was replaced the following year.
And now Hugh Freeze is close to having 3 straight losing seasons. If that happens, and he returns next season, it would be unprecedented in our 134-year history.

We could consider an assistant coach. It's worked for Georgia, Oregon, Ohio State, and several other schools.
Someone who will be on head coaching lists soon is Mack Leftwich, OC at Texas Tech.
30 years old.
4th ranked offense in 2025 (Texas Tech).
5th ranked offense in 2024 (Texas State).
14th ranked offense in 2023 (Texas State).
1st ranked offense in 2022 (Incarnate Word).
In 2022 before Leftwich was hired by Texas State, they were 114th in total offense. He took them from 114th to 14th and 5th.
He's had elite offenses at 3 different schools and has set offensive records at all 3 of them.

How many more wins would we have had over the past 2 seasons if our players had simply caught punts that hit them in the hands and caught passes that hit them in the hands?
