1. They were 9-3 this season, not 8-4.
2. We have 30 million to spend on our roster.
With that money, we can:
A. Spend most of that money on our current roster and then have a little bit left for the portal.
--or--
B. Spend less on our current roster, and then have more money to spend in the portal.
Either way, it's the same amount of money.
So far, the players who've said they're leaving are all players who had mediocre (or worse) stats this season. We may be better off by taking that money and giving it to more productive players who'll be available on the portal.

Good luck to Waller. He had 1 tackle in 2 years.
I would be curious to read the professional game evaluations of Crawford this season.
They're probably available, but after a quick search, this is all that I found:
"During the 2025 college football season, Auburn cornerback Jay Crawford was targeted frequently as a sophomore starter. Reports noted Crawford was "thrown at a lot" early in the season, particularly as opponents often preferred to test him rather than fellow standout corner Kayin Lee."
So, at least early in the season, our opponents considered Crawford to be our weakest cornerback.
I would also add that we have to stay within our budget. If we have $30 million for roster management, then let's guess that the defense gets about half, $15 million.
We need to pay our 11 starters. We need to pay the 11 second teamers. We need to pay the third+ teamers that we believe have potential. We also need to pay the incoming signees. And we will need money for the portal signees in January.
So if we have $15 million for the defense, and we have all of those players that we'll need to pay, do we really want to pay Crawford $1 million (almost 7% of the budget for the defense)? If we do, then fine, but that obviously leaves less money than we probably anticipated for all of the other defensive players.
For the people who want us to pay Crawford $1 million, I'd be curious to see how they'd pay out the other $14 million to all of the other defensive players, high school signees, and eventual portal signees.

Crawford's season stats:
15 tackles
4 pass deflections
1 interception
That's worth $1 million?

I'm ready for some recruiting news.

South Florida is #2 in total offense. And Tennessee was #1 in total offense when he was the OC in 2022.
We are getting one of the best offenses and playcallers in the country.

F*** yeah! This might turn out to be the best hire of anyone this year!

Where did pate talk about this?
It's on one of his YouTube videos, it was about a week or two before Freeze was fired.
He talks about how he knows someone who wants the Auburn job more than any other job, and then he very clearly hints that Jon Sumrall told him that.

Josh Pate made it very clear that Sumrall told him that he wanted the Auburn job. And then when Cohen finally began calling Sumrall, Cohen's pitch was so awful that Sumrall lost interest and finally had to tell Cohen to stop calling.
That is 100% on the shoulders of Cohen. I'm not a huge fan of Sumrall, I would've selected several other coaches before him.
But we had several highly sought after coaches who wanted to coach at Auburn, and Cohen ruined it with his incompetence.

Disgusting. What a joke you are, Cohen.
This "coaching search" was nothing but a sham the entire time, which explains why we were already hearing about potential offensive coordinators a week ago.

This can't be happening. Surely this cannot be happening.
Wow, so apparently we've made an agreement with our next coach.
Any guesses as to who it is?

why would we want him?
An Auburn defense with Riley's top 10 offense is a recipe for championships, in my opinion.
We had elite offenses in 2004, 2010, and 2013, and we were probably the best team in the country all 3 seasons.
But it probably doesn't matter, because Cohen doesn't appear interested in Riley or any other coach who might cost more than 6 or 7 million.

JGT said he got a text during the game that said FL was reaching out to Golesh.
If Golesh goes to Florida and Sumrall goes to Ole Miss, who is left? Chesney? Maybe we can call Riley?

The guy that posted this on Reddit just took it all back. Said his sources walked back/deleted tweets, etc.
WTF? That was the only good news of this entire search, and now it's not even happening?

So it looks like Sumrall to Florida and Golesh is AUs target. Per ESPN.
I would support that. Golesh has had top 10 offenses as both a coordinator and a head coach.

It's a bit comical that Cohen's two finalists are Sumrall, a coach who is almost unanimously disliked by fans at other schools, and Durkin, a coach who no other school would even consider.
Great job, Cohen!
Great job, Cohen!
It seems as though Durkin has convinced Cohen that he's the only coach in college football who can hold the roster together. Congratulations to Durkin and his interviewing skills, he's almost as good as Scot Loeffler.

Hopefully there are people talking to Cohen today and telling him that if we miss on Sumrall, we should continue interviewing other candidates such as Bob Chesney.
Someone above Cohen needs to take charge now, someone needs to take over the coaching search.
It's not too late, we can start over, there are lots of good candidates still available. What is happening now cannot be acceptable anymore.
