I know I’m in the vast minority, but I have zero problem with Durkin being the hire. The guy has an extensive coaching network and will be able to put together a pretty strong staff imo.
He is a football junky who will have attention to detail and we will do all the small things right. Not to mention he is a string recruiter and has a pretty good network of storing recruiter to pull from.
I have heard Chris Patridge (former national recruiter of the year) and Blake Gideon mentioned on the staff. Pair him with the best OC we can find and go with it.

I think that in a vacuum it is a terrible hire but I understand that that is an opinion. What I do not think is an opinion is that it is awful to hire him because the guy you wanted told you to frick off because you tried to mandate his staff.

It’s Golesh or DJD at this point.
Golesh with Durkin staying around as DC is a hire that has potential. Golesh has very good offenses, his defenses have just sucked arse at USF. He also immediately turned a shitty USF program around from being a 1 win team to a 7 win team in one season.
He's 8-3 with wins over Boise St and Florida, and his only losses were at Miami and 3 point losses to Memphis and Navy on the road. He beat the crap out of North Texas on the road giving them their only loss, and he has a top 5 scoring offense in the country this year.
He's also a product of the Heupel tree and runs a similar offense, so we know his offense can be successful in the SEC (Tenn has had a top 2 offense in the SEC along with Kiffin since Heupel has been there).
I've honestly kinda preferred Golesh to Sumrall from the start. If we are stuck on keeping Durkin as DC it's actually a very good fit.

Giving us all the finger. Cute.
Yes, smart arse, you’re going to get what you want. After an exhaustive, nationwide search, Cohen is going to come to the conclusion that the best HC in the whole wide world just happened to already be our very own DC.
Remember to give yourself the finger when we’re back here in 3 years.

Why the frick should Sumrall (a football coach who has experienced nothing but success) take the word of former baseball coach John Cohen on who his DC should be?
This is stupid. Just bc he coached baseball you think he knows jack shite about football??? You're smarter than this.

These guys picked Hugh Freeze last time, which means that their "coaching evaluation criteria" clearly isn't worth shite.
The reasons why some give Cohen some slack on that have been well hashed out already and seem completely reasonable to me

Also, you have no conclusive proof that Sumrall just wants to bring his G5 coaching staff with him. This is fear mongering.
It definitely comes from a place of fear but also a place of logic and reason. G5 guys flame out most of the time and their inability to put a supporting staff together is high on the list of reasons why. So why not try to mitigate that risk? Its so obviously whats best for both parties and im surprised UF is willing to run it back with another fully autonomous G5 guy.

Not sure how reliable it is (probably not very) but there's a guy on r/wde that just dropped some Golesh information.
Wants to hire Halzle as OC, friends with Durkin, boosters support it, announcement timeline unchanged.

Fans are revolting and Sumrall wants to wait.

Do you think that that was a mistake by the UGA AD that just happened to work out?
Its Kirby fricking smart. Saban 2.0. Had coached in the SEC for a decade. He was never gonna need any help.

From Reddit:
quote:
Golesh and Auburn are talking extensively today with the belief that unless Lane stays at Ole Miss and/or Florida pulls their offer, Sumrall is not happening The belief is that Golesh wants to bring Tennessee’s current offensive coordinator/QB coach Joey Halzle in as his OC/QB coach should he take a P4 job. Halzle and Golesh worked together at Tennessee and UCF. Golesh is apparently open to retaining Durkin as the defensive coordinator as the two of them are apparently good friends Golesh is a popular name among the boosters who have already moved on from Sumrall Auburn still wants to make an announcement either tomorrow or Monday

Oh man we may luck into one.

That has the potential to be a solid combo.

30 minutes before kickoff and John Cohen is on here pleading his case to hire Durkin

You’re not going to convince me that telling a potential HC who to keep from a loser staff is a good thing.
DJ is almost certainly a better DC than the guy Sumrall would bring in. Just probabilistically speaking. And he would keep a young talented defensive roster in tact. You're not gonna convince me that flipping the roster is a better route to competing next year. Literally everything is there on the defensive side of the roster. You try to keep that if you can.

Don’t worry, this one will fall through, I cant wait for Durkin as HC and Bobby MF Petrino as his OC

Thammel just posted that we have moved on from Summral. I guess he wouldn’t bend the knee

The guy on reddit said the door was still open, but we arent interested in paying him 9plus. We feel there are better options.
Posted on 11/29/25 at 2:07 pm to AUtigR24
Watch Sumrall go to UF and still hire Durkin as DC because he can
Posted on 11/29/25 at 2:14 pm to Beachbum87
TheCAW running his little victory lap all over the UF board is pretty funny.
